Clitheroe.......... ...................... 2 Kidsgrove Athletic..................1 CLITHEROE rose to the occasion
on Thursday night to win their first
trophy in 13 years. A late winner from substitute Dennis
Hill handed the Blues the NWTL Flood lit Trophy - the Shawbridge outfit's first silverware since the 1986 North West Counties’ League First Division title. Clitheroe went into the game very

Steve Parry delivered the club's first silver
win the cup, but the lads have let themselves down in the league, and they accept that. "The real test for us is next sea
son - it is nice to win trophies, but to be fair the Floodlit is only the third-ranking trophy in the league, although everyone would
like to win it. "This club has to be in the Um-
Bond League. "The cup win gives us a bit of
time and takes some of the pres sure off, but this is a big job and there is a lot of work to be done. "We don't stop at the Floodlit
Trophy." He added: "We have won some
thing, and that is an achievement because a maximum of four clubs can win anything at our level. "We have shown what we are
capable of, and what we are poor at.

"The lads have the ability, and we must build on this win next
season. "I am disappointed with the
progress made in the league - the side has let themselves down at
times. "There is not a big difference
between us and the top sides, it is just about consistency. "The cup win highlights that -
on our day we can beat anyone, but the week after we lose to someone near the bottom of the
table." Parry looked back at the sides
cup success: "We wanted to win a trophy this year, as the league was
written off early on. "We did well in the FA Vase and reached the quarter-finals of
the League Cup. "So it was good for the club and the fans that we won something

after 13 years of waiting. "But I have achieved nothing
yet - we are nowhere near where I
want us to be." The Blues now face four succes
sive away games in the remaining five league fixtures, and Parry said: "We have to show some char acter now, or we will finish towards the bottom. "I am sure the sides we play
(Rossendale tonight, Vauxhall on Saturday, Ramsbottom on Mon day and Cheadle on Wednesday) will take great delight is beating
us." Parry admitted the side were
quiet in the dressing room after the 3-1 home defeat against Nantwich, but the game could
have gone either way. The Blues got off to an ideal
start after a minute when a goal keeping error saw Dave Gardner

Clitheroe were confident of a repeat. The Blues started like a house on fire as they took the game to Kidsgrove at
Maine Road. Steve Parry's men took the lead after
only eight minutes when Brian Welch, who passed a late fitness test, saw his shot palmed away, only for Dave Gard ner to fire home the rebound. Kidsgrove did not know what had hit
