law was the manager. In that case, a Securicor

High Bentham, and David Haddon (30), from Hamil ton, Scotland, admitted conspiracy to rob Michael Banks and his wife, Lois, at their home in Billington. Martin Steiger QC (pros-,

ecuting) said the robbery took place on December

5th, 1996. After hearing a noise in

the kitchen, the couple saw four masked men. Mr Banks was tortured, taken downstairs, gagged and blindfolded, and tied up. The gang, looking for a

driver was punched and robbed of a bag containing

£5,800. Kenneth Stevenson (29),

them the safe did not exist, they threatened to cut off one of his wife's fingers. They eventually left with £20,000-worth of jewellery, cash and property. Jonathan Foster QC

from Glasgow, admitted the robbery, and was jailed for

five years. O'Hagan was sentenced

(defending) said there was no suggestion that father- of-five O'Hagan participat ed in the robbery. He plead ed guilty on the basis that he had received and passed on telephone messages, and played a minor role at a late

stage. Mr Foster described

safe which they believed contained £100,000, pistol whipped him and struck him with a hammer while his wife was tied up. The pistol was held

O'Hagan as one of the most productive informants and the court heard that he had received more than £3,000 for information in the past. O'Hagan had been acquitted of another charge

to four-and-a-half years and Haddow, who admitted conspiracy in both rob beries, got seven-and-a-half

years. Haddow had given evi

dence against O'Hagan in an earlier trial and Judge John Townend said that otherwise the sentence would have been 15 years. He said: "Distasteful

though it may be to the general public, it is neces sary in the ongoing fight against crime that people such as you should be encouraged to give evidence against fellow criminals.”

bombings

A HIGH-PROFILE secu rity operation has been launched by Lancashire police, following recent bombings in London. Members of the public

are being asked to act as the "eyes and ears" of local comunities by reporting anything suspicious. The operation includes an

and 1,500 support staff have been briefed about the need for increased vigilance, while Supt Helliwell has also acknowledged the important part the public can play by acting as the "eyes and ears" of local com munities by reporting any suspicious activity. He especially urged post

men, milkmen, garage fore court staff and CCTV oper ators to report anything unusual or suspicious.
