THE MUSHROOM POT with Garry Taylor and Karen Davies, ofThe Walton Arms,Altham.

A PUB in Altham has become the first in Lancashire to receive a prestigious beer quality award. The Walton Arms, at Altham,

which is owned by Jennings Brothers, the Lake District brewer, is the first in the Red Rose county to be award ed a Cask Marque symbol. Cask Marque is a national inde

partner, Karen Davies, have been at the Walton Arms for just over 12 months and are building a reputation for serving high quality food which is both imaginative and reasonably priced. The pub was refurbished last year and the old-world charm of the dining area makes an easy and relaxed atmosphere in which to eat. To mark this prestigious award,

pendent scheme set up to recognise those pubs that serve cask condi tioned ale of the highest quality. The pub had to undergo two vigor

ous checks from independent asses sors who arrived unannounced. On each occasion they sampled the beers on the bar checking for correct tem perature, appearance, aroma and taste. The pub passed both inspec tions with flying colours. Managers Garry Taylor and his

TURNING my attention to the supermarket wines this week there are some good bar gains to be had that will not

break the bank. Tesco's ever-popular Soave Doc is a

refreshingly dry and crisp white wine from the Verona region of Italy. Around £2.49 this is still very good

sound peculiar to some but a handful of winemakers persevere to bring you this unusual style of wine. Called Rccioto di Soave, after the manner in which it is made, the Villa Cerro is available from Tesco, Blackburn, at a reduced price of £3.99 for a half bot tle of the 1995 vintage. Made from selected bunches of

value. The notion of a sweet Soave may

only the ripest grapes, they are taken to the winery and allowed to dry on small trays for three or four months. The resulting partly-dried grapes are then pressed around January after the harvest. The resulting golden liq-

uid undergoes a long and slow fer mentation to produce a sweet wine of immense depth, in comparison to the dry style. There is still a refreshing cut of acidity on the finish so it is not

overly sweet. In contrast the Cono Sur Pinot Noir

1997, is a pure fruit driven, bur gundy- style wine at a remarkable price of £4.99, from Tesco, Clitheroe. Pale in colour but full on the nose

with hints of crushed strawberry and cherry fruit this gives way to a ripe and clean finish. With its gentle acid ity this is possibly better with food, rather than on its own. The bodega of Cono Sur has, in a

short time, become the eighth largest exporter of wine in Chile, with the

THE year is 2058 and shining stars such as Friend's Matt Leblanc and Garry Oldman appear to have as much difficulty finding themselves in a seriously corny script as locat ing themselves in the outer para meters of the universe, in this deep space "shlockbuster." Loosely based on the 'sixties Amer

UK market taking most of this. The bodega has undergone massive

transformation and investment. This hi-tech winery, situated in the Rapel Valley, is influenced by the cool Pacif ic winds and often foggy mornings. This prolongs the cool growing sea son favoured by the pinot noir and the winemaker captures the true essence of the freshly picked grapes, maximising on flavour. Following on with Cono Sur’s crisp, clean image you will find the bottle is a typical Burgundy shape, built with a fluted top and black plastic "cork” to finish off, so no "corked" bottles will be found. A wine rated by Oz Clarke as remarkable value cannot be all bad!

ican television serial of the same name, the Robinson family (smarter than your average 4.2), plunge them selves into deep space after Mr Robinson develops "hyper-drive," a bit like the hyper-space of the SS Enterprise, except turbo-boosted. More than just an alternative to a family day-out in Blackpool, they are on their way to planet Alpha to try and establish a colony, because, with the earth’s ozone layer down to 40 per cent, it is going to end up like a fresh ly-cooked Lancashire hotpot very

soon. Of course, the inevitable baddies

have to put a spanner in the works in the shape of Global Sedition, a shady organisation, full of shady characters

whose purpose seems to be . . . well, shady. But thank the stars for their vile representative, Garry Oldman, who injects a much-needed amount of sarcastic malevolence to act as a foil to the Robinson family's sicken ing apple pie wholesomeness. It is all the more welcome with the

gut-churning presence of Matt Leblanc as Major West, who appears as either a hunky starship pilot or a muscle-bound cliche machine, depending on your view. Despite his apparent addition to the film to make the ladies gasp with desire, he just ends up making us gasp with dis belief at the utter haminess of his deliveries. As he reels around the skies blast

inevitably pretty and frosty ship's scientist, he confides to one of his mates: "That's one cool fish I would like to thaw," but with chat-up lines like "I would be glad to discuss my dimensions over dinner," we hope the pretty and frosty scientist is one sar dine that is going to stay firmly in the deep freeze. When Garry Oldman says "Major West, I highly recom mend you never breed, that's my medical opinion," we agree with his diagnosis with some zeal. This is an ideal alternative to

It does not tax the old grey matter too much and the very special effects every ten seconds, combined with Garry Old man's touch of the Vlad Dracul's, makes the film palatable enough for the corny script not to put you off your supper.
