ON Saturday afternoon Rimington Memorial Institute rang to the happy sounds of youngsters having a marvellous time at their annual party. Almost 40 children from Rimington and Middop attended the event, which began with a fancy dress parade, judged by Mrs D.

Hamoum, with the aid of her two

young sons. Following a tasty tea of hot-dogs and

cakes, the fun continued with games, streamers, balloons and dancing to the Key Street Disco, Mr M. Dewhurst act ing as MC. A group of mums had organ ised the party and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all present. Fancy dress winners were as follows.

First as these pupils display GCSE work

MAKING an exhibi tion of themselves, artistic pupils from Ribblesdale High School, Clitheroe, have achieved a Ribble

Valley first. Paintings and sculp

tures produced by the Year 11 youngsters as part of their GCSE course work have dis placed those of profes sional artists to feature in an unique exhibition at the Harris Gallery in

Preston. Their endeavours, on

display until Saturday, are attracting much criti cal acclaim, with the school scoring a borough first in the invitation to show its work. Delighted head of art Mr Simon Nevett said:

"On a visit to the gallery, staff were so impressed with the commitment to art shown by Ribblesdale pupils that we were invit ed back to stage our own exhibition. "From a group of 30 stu

dents, we have approxi mately 40 pieces on dis play, which means we have completely taken over the gallery. We are the only school from this area to ■ ; have been given such an honour."

Rural isolation is one of priorities looked at in regional health initiative

THE priorities relating to rural isolation are included in a new health initiative. A special improvement plan

has been drawn up by the East Lancashire Health Authority, with general points supple mented by specific ones for each of the six boroughs it cov-

ers. Mental health, services for

the elderly and rural isolation and deprivation are especially mentioned in the Ribble Valley

part of the plan. The replacement of Clitheroe

Health Centre is one of the major

issues for the authority. It also wants to consider the needs of the elderly where there is

a recurrent thread of the role of carers. They play a vital role in small and isolated communities, but often have unrecognised needs of their own. The plan suggests that the health, social and volun tary services work together to iden tify these needs and consider options for offering greater sup

port. But the health authority also

acknowledges the difficulties faced by patients needing hospital treat ment. Its plan says that there is a need to ensure that specialist ser vices can be planned and commis sioned effectively through the com plexities of new structures - a par ticular issue for Preston Trust. The draft of the plan is now

being considered by various organ isations involved.

Two Ribble Valley firms announce link-up of their property services

CHARTERED surveyors J. S. Atherton and Co., with offices in Whalley and Black burn, have merged their prop erty services with Clitheroe- based Ribble Valley Estate

Agency. Mr Stephen Hatton, of Ribble

Valley Estate Agents, has been selling houses in the Clitheroe area for more than 30 years. The move comes in order to expand both businesses' penetration of the housing market throughout

the area. Mr John Atherton has been

based in Whalley for nearly five years, specialising in sales and management of rural properties. He is hoping that the newly-forged association will benefit from Mr

*

Hatton's experience of the housing market in the area, along with the professional services his firm pro vides to the farming community and to rural businesses. As well as offering a wide range

of surveying services, the firm's two qualified chartered surveyors and their back-up team act as property consultants to the Environment Agency, throughout the North- West, and they are employed by Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council to manage their agricul tural estates throughout the bor

ough. Mr Atherton, a keen fisherman,

also acts as a consultant on fishery rights to several local authorities, North West Water and the Nation al Trust, as well as local fishery owners.
