Council is to seek views on possible drinking ban in Clitheroe’s streets
LOCAL organisations are to be consulted by Ribble Valley Borough Council over the introduction of a by-law to control drinking in Clitheroe
streets. Members of the council's Policy
and Finance Committee heard that a six-month study, carried out by local police into problems associat ed with drinking, had been com pleted and revealed that most crimes and incidents occurred in the town centre at weekends, dur ing the late evening or earlymorn- ing, and resulting in vehicle and criminal damage and wounding.
PLANNING IN THE
PIPELINE
PLANS to erect a Portak- abin for use as a gatehouse and security cabin at the entrance to the site at land off Lincoln Way, Salthill Industrial Estate, Clitheroe (No. 0026) are among appli cations submitted to Ribble Valley Borough Council Planning Department. Ultraframe Pic. is the

Cooks at work
MEMBERS of Clitheroe Young Farmers met at
Pendleton Village Hall for an enjoyable "Ready, Steady, Cook" evening. It was organised by Catherine Cross. Next week's meeting is a
talk about the Cats Protec tion League at Pendleton Village Hall.
The study had to be carried out
before the Home Office considers whether a by-law would be justi
fied. But Director of Legal Services
Mr Paul Timson said that if the council was to pursue the introduc tion of a by-law it would be unlike ly to get Home Office approval. 1-Ie added: "If the committee still
wishes to pursue the introduction of a by-law I would consider it essential to gain the support of other organisations and groups in the town, such'as Clitheroe Civic Society, the Licensed Victuallers’ Association and Clitheroe Town Council."
A consultation-exercise on the
results of the police study may also be necessary, said Mr Timson. The results of the report show
that none of the crimes or incidents can be directly linked to drinking in the streets, and police also confirm that they received no specific com plaints about drinking in the street during the period in question. Members of the, committee
accepted the results of the study, but felt that it did not offer any measures for tackling the problem. Coun. Stephen Sutcliffe
(Clitheroe) said that with or with out the by-law the problem would bo the same, with rowdy revellers
travelling from one town centre pub
to another. Coun. Mrs Margaret Sutcliffe
(Clitheroe) added: "I do not object to what people do while inside the pubs, but I do object to it when they leave to walk home or get a taxi and think it is perfectly okay for them to disturb everyone. "It is a knock-on effect of leaving
the pub." Councillors agreed to consult
local organisations on the proposal to introduce a by-law to control street drinking and on the results of the police study.

"MAGNIFICO" was the verdict on the cook ing of Roefield Leisure Centre manager Tony Rodia at a charity Ital ian evening held in
Whalley. Italian-born Mr Rodia
organised the evening, held at the v i l la g e 's A b b o ts Court Re s tau rant, to launch his fund drive for money to resur face R o e f ie ld 's sp o r ts hall. He hopes to raise £20,000
in just 12 months and his Italian evening, a complete sell-out, set the ball rolling nicely, raising over £1,100. Mr Rodia, like most Ital

diners were tickled by a minestrone risso-e-faggolli soup starter, followed by the near-immortal Mania's lasagne. "It's quite a differ ent dish from your usual lasagne - it’s more in keep ing with the cuisine of Southern Italy," explained

A CRACK has appeared in the smooth face of the Ribble Valley's health survey
Valley could have a drink problem ,,,
record. A new interpretation of figures presented
to the local community health council watchdog reveals that there could be a drink problem in the area. A report says that lifestyle data suggests
low levels of potentially health- damaging behaviour, such as smoking, and the high
est level in North East Lancashire of posi tive health behaviour, such as cycling. "However, unsafe drinking behaviour
was an exception," says the report - higher proportions of both men and women men tioned it than in the rest of the district. As mentioned in previous survey reports,
conception rates are markedly lower, par ticularly among teenagers.

Sabden born and bred, have known one another since an early age. Mr Britcliffe (76) worked
as head gardener for Huntroyde Estates before switching to a similar post at Calderstones Hospital until he retired. Mrs Britcliffe worked at
Stuttard's mill and also cleaned at Littlemoor Shel tered Housing, where the couple now live, until she was 72. They say their long-last
ing love affair is down to "give and take". Mrs Britcliffe added:
"You have to join in with one another and help each other all the time. I have been very lucky; he looks after me very well." The pair toasted their
golden day with a party and disco in St Mary's Hall. (200199/5/5a)
Child welfare clinic is closing A MONTHLY child welfare clinic in Ribchester is set to
close. Communicare NIIS Trust says that dwindling atten
dances are the reason. The clinic's second Friday of the month morning sessions have had as few as two patients in the past year, with a maximum of 11. Child welfare clinics have now been established by Lon- gridge doctors and it felt that home visits are the best way
for health visitors to work. Community Health Council members are to discuss the proposal at a committee meeting today.
