Four-goal Chatburn are the new league leaders

Earby Town ......................................2 CH A T BU R N went to the top of the E a s t L a n ca sh ire F o o tb a l l League Second Division with this far from convincing display. In fact it was Earby who caused all the problems with a much-changed

team. They had the Chatburn back-four

in real trouble and it was no surprise

corner. Despite all their efforts Chatburn

were still one down at the interval. The second half started in similar

fashion, but 10 minutes in Clarkson was up-ended in the box and Braith- waite coolly netted. The referee then sent the Earby

centre-back for an early bath after a second bookable offence.

Chatburn started to play some nice football after that and Young put

Chatburn into the lead. The same player was on hand to

make it 3-1 within minutes. To their credit Earby fought back

and scored to make it 3-2 as Chat- burn’s defence wobbled again. Bradshaw settled things late on

when he rounded the Earby defence and slotted home to make it 4-2.

Judge hit top form on return to action

Accrington Sport ..........1 and, on 14 minutes, winger JudgeWalmcsley . . ,4

STRAIGHT from the kick off, the Judge Walmesley dominated this encounter against an ou t -o f -s o r ts

Accrington team. The Billington outfit grafted

harder as a team and played the much better football. In the first minute, the stur

dy Judge striker Andy White should have done better when he went through on goal only to

fire wide. They kept the pressure up

up on the edge of the box and ran through to collect a Nick Grogan back-header. He finished magnificently

curling the ball inside the post past the helpless stand-in Accrington goalkeeper. Ten minutes later, and Gro

gan nearly scored a blinding goal as he skilfully skipped around the Accrington defence. He rifled a shot from a tight angle only to clip the wrong

side of the far post. Accrington seemed to tem

porarily wake from their appar ent slumber, when the Judge back four lost their concentra tion to allow midfielder Tony Rodia to thunder through on goal and unleash a fearsome shot. But Judge keeper Alan Tay

lor, who was in fine form, par ried it away for a comer. It was only a flash in the pan

for the Accrington men and it was only a question of time before Judge claimed their sec ond, which they did on the stroke of half-time when a dreadful mistake saw the ball

minutes old. Walmsley netted his first after quarter of an

half-time. Carter completed his hat-trick after the

break, before Rishton pulled one back. Walmsley made it 6-1, and Rishton added a

cap his man-of-the-match performance. The Under 15s got back to winning ways with

an 11-0 win over Rossendale Valley. Liam Hill- Parker hit a hat-trick, and Jamie Thomas, Ross Kilmister and star man Tom Smith each bagged a brace. Andrew Strong and Mark Punchard

completed the scoring. A marvellous display of attacking football saw

Wolves’ Under 11s side beat Michelin 7-0. The outstanding Jake Chadwick continued

his scoring spree with four goals, while Michael Barker got two and Oliver Nuttall netted the goal of the game with a superb shot. The Under 10s Blue team beat Great Har wood Town 5-1 in their Accrington League Cup

match. Robert Partridge opened the scoring and then

leading scorer Tom Rutherford cracked in two

quick goals. Scott Rushton then added his first for the

club, and Chris Blockeel scored a screamer to

make it 5-1. The Wolves now play Pendle Forest and have

improved on last season’s efforts with a third of

the season left to play. However, the Under 10s Red team lost 2-1

against Barrowford Celtic. Celtic took the lead with a goal David Beck

ham would have been proud of, but Wolves hit back with Luke Green following in the rebound from Sam Johns' driven shot. Both teams had chances, but Celtic snatched

a winner. The Under 14s also had cup success, winning

a five-goal thriller against Haslingden. The Wolves were 2-0 down at the break after

two defensive errors. Gary Brunskill pulled one back with a well-

taken goal and with eight minutes to play Richard Rudd showed good skill to take the tie

into extra-time. The extra period was end to end, but man-of- the-match Brunskill put Clitheroe through five

minutes from the end. The Under 8s had two games at the weekend. On Saturday, they beat Barrowford Celtic 4-2

in a friendly with goals from Richard Clarkson, man-of-the-match Daniel Meyler, Adam Bower

AFTER losing the toss Craven had to kick into a very strong wind, but they soon came to terms with the conditions and tried to play their way out of their own half. They were rewarded when a long-throw from Shears was flicked on and Blackledge scored at

the far post. The Dog then came more into the game, but

the Craven defence held firm and a quick move from the back led to Aspinwall scoring just

before half-time. In the second half Craven used the wind to

their advantage. More goals followed when Traynor hit a shot

from 35-yards which came back off the bar to find Aspinwall on hand to knock homo the

rebound. With shots flying in from all angles, it was no

surprise when Craven scored again with Aspin wall completing his luit-trick. Right at the end

and Matthew Winckley. On Sunday they were back in league action

winning 1-0 against a good Colne Clarets side. Winckley was again on target, with James

Tootle star man. After a two-month lay-off, the Under 16s looked rusty as they struggled to beat lowly

■ Rossendale Valley. Michael Pidlyskyj scored the only goal - his first for the club - from a comer. Keeper David Procter earned his man-of-the-

hour, and a Walmsley penalty made it 4-0 at match award with a string of good saves. F

OR the first lime this season Whalley Arrows Under 10s clicked and earned a 2-0 victory over

Haslingden. In the first half they were simply unstoppable. Mark Astley and Robert Kellaway were resolute

in defence. Marlon Murray, Alex Alex Smith and man-of-the-match Gary Micaleff won everything in midfield. And striker James Richardson scored

then made and missed a penalty. In the second half Haslingden improved. The Arrows lost their shape slightly, hut Michael

Dilworth in goal could not be beaten. Whalley eventually ran out 2-0 winners after a

second goal from Alex Smith.

as they had a convincing 9-0 win over Foulridge Man-of-the-match Andrew Bennett and

Andrew Stubbs both bagged three. Robert Simpson, Matthew Miller and Mar-

tyn Thompson were also on target. Jamie Bury bagged a brace as the Under 8s

beat Foulridge Minors 3-1. Tony Haworth got the other with Tim Rakshi man-of-the-match. The Under 9s lost 5-0 to the same club with

Kieron Laycock outstanding. The Under 10s shared six goals with Borrow-

dale United with Martin Pollard, Chris Holt and man-of-the-match Oliver Tyreman on the score- s h e e t . The Under Us were beaten 9-0 by Ighten Leigh despite the efforts of man-of-the-match

Daniel Campbell. The Under 13s went all the way to penalties

in their cup quarter-final clash with Haslingden but unfortunately lost out in the shoot-out. Man-of-the-match Joe Waller, Robbie St

John and Steven James netted. The Under 14s Accrington League side lost 3-

. 1 against North Valley in the cup. The game was even until the final 10 minutes when North Val

ley scored twice. The Readstone goal came from Michael Cant

and Tom Fearnhead was named man-of-the-

match. The Under 14s Burnley League team beat

Fulledge 2-0 thanks to two goals from Andrew Moores. Danny Liles was man-of-the-match.

he scored his fourth. Waddington 3, Carlcton Reserves 1

WADDINGTON showed great will to win, and

were rewarded with a good victory. After a slow start, the locals condensed play into their opponents' half, resulting in consider

able pressure. However, chances were squandered in front of

goal for much of the first half. Finally Sutcliffe broke the stalemate two min

utes before the break with a 40-yard run ending with a fine shot across the face of goal, with the ball going in off the post. Waddington continued to force the game in

the second half but Carlcton responded with a powerful header from a corner, beating the keep er to equalise. The home side maintained their composure

and continued to press. Tactical substitutions introduced new pace up front, which paid divi dends with goals from Chaplin and Parsons.

trundle through the last defend er's legs for White to gleefully run onto and slot home with some ease. Judge struck again immedi

ately after the break with a beautiful passing move between the front three, which took them right into the Accrington box, where Grogan toyed with the Accrington back four, before looking up, picking his spot and firing home. Accrington might have had

something to fight for if striker Jimmy Whitehead had man aged to head home a superb diagonal cross from Tony Rodia, which found the striker in much too much space on the far post, but unfortunately for him he headed high, wide and not very handsomely. With five minutes to go, the

tireless Dave Crenshaw made a superb run down the right flank to cross the ball right on the by line.

"• ’It found White who claimed his second from a couple of yards out. A goal from a White- head header in the last two minutes was scant consolation for the Accrington team who had simply been outclassed by the Judge men who leapfrog over them in the table. © In the rest of the Memorial League Swan Whalley won six valuable points when they won 8-3 at Apeks. Trusty Heanan kicks Clitheroe to high-scoring victory Clitheroe......................................24

Lostock ...................................0 WITH scheduled opponents Bur- nage w ith d raw in g a t th e last minute, it lo ok ed like a blank weekend for the men from Little- moor until Lostock stepped in to

make the short trip from Bolton. No doubt, by the end of the game, they were rueing that decision as the

locals ran out comfortable 24-0 winners. Clitheroe dominated in every

aspect of the game. The front row of Andrew Thornber,

were outstanding. Once they had come to terms with

some unconventional scrummaging by Lostock, they remorselessly drove the opposition back time and time

again. Playing with the wind in the first

half, Clitheroe built up a 12-point lead via the trusty boot of scrum-half Malcolm Heanan. The game, for the most part, was

played in Lostock territory, and the only surprise was that Clitheroe

scored just 12 points. The second half was a more open

affair. Skipper Roger Holmes came with

in a yard of the game’s first try fol lowing a spectacular run from

Heanan. Wingman Andrew Moorby com

bined with Holmes and centre Nick Hutchenson to set up a rolling maul close to the Lostock lino moments later. From the resulting scrum number

eight Tim Ilitchen claimed his first try.

With the lead at 17 points there h

was no way back for Lostock, as hard as they might try. With 10 minutes remaining

Ilitchen notched his second score as the Lostock pack was neatly reversed over their own try line. Heanan added the extra points to

give the final score of 24-0. After the game skipper Holmes

was rightfully pleased with the result: “We changed our warm-up routine to

try and build some team spirit and it

seemed to pay dividends. "Winning league matches is a must

and today we delivered the goods."
