Parry ready to book a date at the home of football? T
By JUSTIN CONNOLLY
HE home of football beck on s on ce aga in fo r Clitheroe on Saturday as
they hit the Wembley trail. They take on Wessex League side
Bemerton Heath Harlequins at Shawbridge and the prize on offer is a place in the quarter-finals of this
year’s FA Carlsberg Vase. Reaching the last 16 is in itself a
major achievement for manager Steve Parry in his first season in
charge at Shawbridge. He hopes to emulate his prede
cessors by guiding the side to Wem bley and bettering them by actual ly winning the competition. But he also knows that at this
stage there are no easy games. “We are quietly confident,” he
said. “The most important thing is that we’ve got the home draw. “We’ve had them watched a couple
of times and they like to play football. “They play a slightly different
pattern than we do, so we’ ll have to be aware of that.
&W^r6 OI that “ But all in all it looks like it
should be a good game of football.” Parry is happy with his side’s
form, despite a relatively lowly league posit ion for a club of
Clitheroe’s stature. “We are looking stronger every
week,” he said. “After a bit of a bad patch when
we lost a couple of games we are beginning to get back to our best.” Clitheroe didn’t get the chance to
fine-tune their plans for Saturday on M on d a y night, when their scheduled league clash with Holker Old Boys was postponed. “ I was disappointed not to play,
but I can understand it from a pitch point of view,” Parry said. “We need a good surface and had
we played on it on M on d a y it would not have recovered.” Clitheroe’s final game before Sat
urday’s big match was a visit to Skelmersdale on Saturday. The side performed well but

could manage only a 1-1 draw. “The first half was probably the best performance we have produced
since I’ve been here,” Parry said. “We enjoyed lots of possession
and created a few good chances. "The lad getting sent off didn’t real
ly change things, and we should have been more than 1-0 up by half-time. “We decided not to change
things because we were doing so well, but in the second half we did n’ t really come out. “They changed their shape and
started to dominate the midfield. “We lost possession a lot injthe
midfield and that put the defence
under pressure. “ It took us half-an-hour to get
going, but by that time they had scored from a corner. “ Even at the end their keeper
made three good saves and had we put those away it would have been
a fair result.” One plus point for the boss was
Brian Welch’s first goal in Clitheroe colour? since he joined the side
three weeks ago. “ The only thing with Brian is
that he hadn’ t played much before joining us, so by his own admission

cashire title in his chosen sport. Nigel, a members of HICKS, was seeded second in the championships, which were held in Prestwich, Manchester. “The number one seed couldn’t make the tournament because he was stuck in the USA,” Nigel said after
S
returning to Clitheroe with the top prize. “He’s is a lot better than everyone else and is about
10th in the country. “But you have to take your chance and there were still
a lot of very good players there.” The competition was held over the whole of last week
with the final being held on friday night. John Lambert was Nigel’s opponent, hut the Clitheroe
man swept him aside to take the title 3-1. Nigel, who has been in the county’s top three for the
last seven or eight years, is also a coach at HICKS. He takes sessions with seven to 10-yeur olds on
Wednesdays, and 11-yenr-olds upwards on Thursday’s
at the Chatburn Road site. Anybody interested in joining the sessions should
contact the club on 01200 426887.

for the Blues. But Clitheroe could count themselves unlucky not to
have won the game. They created plenty of
chances, but found the Skelmersdale keeper in fine
form. At the other end Clitheroe
keeper Jon Parrott had little
to do. Skelmersdale created little
and their goal came from a
set-piece. But Clitheroe were unable
to capitalise on their first-half pressure, when they should really have put the game beyond their opponents. The home side had Mike Channon, son of former Eng

things got better for Clitheroe when Skelmersdale’s Brett Golding was sent off for vio lent conduct. But the second half was a
different story as 10-men Skelmersdale began to string some good passages of play
together. After 55 minutes the Blues
were caught out when Paul M cD on a ld rose a b ove the defence to head home the equaliser from a corner. Dave Gardiner came on to
replace Clitheroe striker Jon Riley, and had the chances to give Clitheroe victory late on. But he pulled his best

he’s lost a yard of pace,” Parry said. “ But that will come back and
now he’s got his first goal it will be a boost to his confidence. “That confidence will go through
the side. Hopefully that confidence will help us on Saturday, but to be honest nobody needs motivating for a game like this.” One player who will be joining
the squad for that game is defender Ian Lang, who has re-signed for the Blues after leaving for Lancaster City last year. And with a place in the quarter
finals at stake Parry is hoping the Clitheroe fans will turn out in force to cheer on the side. “We had a good crowd against St
