A CHIPPING man has been named as the
year which bears fruit for the industry NFU chief is an adopted Lancastrian
new county branch chairman for the Lan cashire National Farm
ers' Union. Mr Peter Stott, of Clark
House Farm, was due to be elected at the county branch's annual meeting held last night. He takes over from Mr John Sephton,
of Banks. Commenting on his new role,
Mr S to t t said: "Let us hope th a t the year ahead bears the fruits of the labours of those working in and for the agricul
tural industry.”
shirman, 58-year-old Mr Stott is now very much a Lancastrian and is well know to members across the county, having been county chairman of the NFU's Milk Committee for the past two years and a member of the Coun ty Executive Committee for the past decade. Mr Stott was also chairman of the Chipping branch for two years in the 1980s.
Although he was bom a York- Stepping up to the role of
county chairman will not be too much of a shock to Mr Stott's system as he has been deputy chairman for the last year and has represented the NFU on many occasions. Agriculture is
very much part of his life and when he is not working on the farm or representing the NFU, he is busy helping out on the Chip ping Show Committee, of which he is a past chairman. Mr Stott is also a member and past chair man of Ribblesdale Farmers'
Club. Mr Stott and his wife, Kath,
have three daughters, Sarah, Anne and Rachel, as well as a son, John, who works on the fam ily farm. Mr and Mrs Stott are also the proud grandparents of two children. Their farm consists of 65 dairy cows and followers and 60 half-bred mule ewes, and even boasts a camping barn,
which forms part of the Bowland Network.
Outside of farming spheres, he
has been a member of Chipping Parish Council for the past 18 years and is a past governor of both village schools and Lon- gridge High School.
I t must he something to do
with the fact that farmers get up so early, as Mr Stott manages to find the occasional free hour or two to follow his hobbies of crick et, bowls and walking in the Lake District.
Mr Stott's deputy will be Mr
David Neave, of Ashworth, near Rochdale.

Family matters are to be just their cup of tea
THE days of home-baked cakes and butter pies wrapped in newspaper may be coming to an end as Sabdens cafe owning couple plan to hang up their pinnies for good. The Cafe, which doubles-up as Pendle Wool Shop, has
been a quirky fixture in the town for around seven years. Mrs Joan Thompson, who has run the shop in its vary ing forms with her husband, Richard, for 25 years, admit
ted she will be sad to leave. "I come in when I don't have to. 1 even come in on a
Sunday to steep the peas. But during the course of this year it will be put up for sale. It's just having the nerve to
do it - I mean, I'm 64," she said. The couple, who live in Clithcroc Road, Sabden started But the, delights of Sabden’s one and only traditional ...._' , , . .

tea-room can be sampled for at least a few months yet. Mrs Thompson said: "We will put up a 'For Sale sign
at Easter and stay for as long as it takes. Maybe someone will come the following day — maybe it could take two
years, you just don't knfiw." •

cy is funding FWAG's Sus tainable Rivers Project,
giving grants to fanners in an effort to improve water quality and wildlife habi tats and avoid river bank

says: "Overgrazing of river banks can cause erosion and loss of wildlife habi tats, but restricting live stock access can prevent
this. "Some arable practices
can cause loss of soil into rivers, smothering the water and introducing con

that even tiny quantities of synthetic pyrethroid sheep dips can kill aquatic verte bra te s for hundreds of metres downstream, depriving fish and other wildlife of a vital source of food."
