Decision time soon as councillors take a look at future use of town’s two halls

Request for feasability study grant from the National Lottery by Tim Procter

WHAT is the long term future for Clitheroe Parish Church's elaborately constructed parish

had been thinking of mak ing their own application - and combining the two seemed to be the way for ward. There is no estimate at

hall? Thousands of hours

of valuable, and usual ly enjoyable, use have been obtained by churchpeople and oth ers from the hall's spa cious accommodation, o I t still hosts a wide variety of meetings and shows and you can even give blood there. But, for many people, it is how not so much a tra ditional building as an old-fashioned one. This week Ribble Val

the moment of what money might be needed to ensure the future of the buildings. The figures depend on which might be used for what purposes - but, naturally, the council and the church would like the town to retain both if a t all possible. But although they comply with all legal requirements, bringing them up to mod ern amenity and appear ance standards will not be cheap. Applications for grants

Landowners PLANNING warned to be IN THE prepared | PIPELINE for walkers

FARMERS and landown

ers are being warned to prepare now for waves of weekend walkers who, as the weather improves, are expected to descend on the

Ribble Valley. Clearly marking the

routes of rights of way on their land is key to manag ing public access to the local countryside, accord ing to th e Country Landowners' Association. I t warns that poor sign

ing encourages walkers to follow their own paths and

diversions. While detr im ental to

land management, this could also lead to unofficial ways being claimed as sec ondary public access routes by virtue of their populari

ty and usage. • The association has pro duced waymarker packs to help farmers pre-empt path problems. The packs come in three colour schemes - yellow waymarkers for public footpaths, blue for bridleways and red for by-

’ways open to all traffic. Each pack costs £4 and

consists of 10 markers and an information sheet. For further details, contact the association's regional office on 01423 563713.
