build and develop the bond and V be relaxing for both parent and baby. It also encourages babies to sleep better. It is important to only massage your baby if he or she is in good health. Check with your GP before starting if your baby is unwell, lethargic or generally not in good health.

This year, one of mine is to make 1998 a very special year for Marie Curie Cancer Care. around the UK, relies on you and me to support its invaluable work. There are a number of ways in which you can help, and it won't hurt one bit! New Year clearout! Why not go through your cup boards and drawers and take any unwanted clothing, shoes, acces sories, bric-a-brac or gifts to your local Marie Curie shop at 121 St James's Street, Burnley. Visit your local shop! Forget the madness of the January sales and remember it's always bargain time at Marie Curie Cancer Care shops where you will be guaranteed a warm welcome.
Give some time! This is a wonderful opportunity to get out and about, meet new peo ple and help a wonderful cause. Our volunteers come from all walks of life and all age groups, and just a few hours each week would make a huge difference. If you join me in at least one of these resolutions you will be mak ing a vital contribution to the work of the nation's largest cancer care charity. . Helping Marie Curie Cancer Care charity shops is a resolution we should all want to keep. Please join me. Annette Crosbie OBE

THE ENVIRONMENT Your baby will feel more comfortable in a room which is quiet, draught-free and warm. Keep the room at a constant tempera ture of 80F or 2GC, as babies lose body heat much faster than adults. Choose an area to massage your baby where there is plenty of room for movement, and avoid direct sunlight and heat. Make sure there are no objects or hot drinks nearby which may fall on to your baby and that all dangerous appliances are switched off. The safest place to massage your baby is on the floor. Never leave your baby unattended and keep any pets out of the room.

THE MASSAGE SESSION Firstly remove any rings, watches or bracelets to avoid scratching your baby, ensure that your nails have no sharp rough edges and wash your hands with a mild or gen tle soap so that they are warm and clean. Never massage your . k baby if you have any skin infection or infection around the nails. Keep looking at your baby and talking to him or her softly throughout the massage, and leave one hand in contact at all times to make them feel secure. Ideally your baby should be naked for the mas sage. However, some babies can feel insecure when they are undressed so you can leave their vest on. Remove the baby's nappy, but place a clean one underneath in case of accidents. The best time to massage your baby is at least 90 minutes after feeding, when your baby will have digested his or her food, and won't be feeling hungry. If your baby begins to cry during the massage, stop, give him a cuddle and only if your baby settles should you try to
continue with the massage s e s s i o n .

baby's skin. Place the oil within easy reach, but out of reach for your baby. Older babies tend to get restless and may wrig gle during the massage and some babies prefer to sit up while having their back massage. Don't try to force your baby to lie down - remember to respond to his or her needs. Massage can easily be given while your baby is sitting. Your baby may like a toy to play with or to suck on a dummy to help them relax. Massage your baby with slow, gentle stroking
movements. You do not need to apply any pres sure.
The
amount of time spent massaging your baby depends upon response - 10 minutes is about average or as long as your
baby is comfortable, but remember it is time to stop when the baby indicates that
he or she has had enough. There are special classes teaching you how to massage your baby properly. Ask your health visitor, midwife or local hospital for more infor mation.
