You began 1998 full of good intention to increase your fitness and lose some weight — but now what you thought would be easy has turned out to be a long uphill slog! Well believe it or not it can be easier than you think — just go back to basics and get some advice, motivation and guidance. At the end of the day the only way to lose weight is to take into your body less calories than you are burning. So you can either eat less calories by watching your diet or burn more calo ries through becoming more active. Ideally and most successfully, you want to do both but there is no rush. To lose weight and keep it off. you're only looking to lose 1 -2lbs a week. Don't be taken in by advertisements claiming that wonder pills, miracle diets or slimming saunas w ill make you lose half a stone a week. If you're going to do it, do it safely, sensibly and slowly - the results w ill be rewarding, you'll feel great and you may even
begin to enjoy it!
Change of Image Fitness centres are discarding the mus cled, lycra image of the past and are looking to the future where everybody can feel comfortable, whatever age, ability or shape.
-3 Using a fitness centre is one of the most effective ways to lose weight and keep it off. jogging machines, bikes,
steppers and rowers are used to increase fitness by strengthening the heart and lungs and to burn off calo ries, to reduce or maintain your
weight. The resistance machines strengthen and tone specific muscle areas, even those hard to budge such as tummies and thighs. The air conditioning keeps you cool as you work out. Friendly, experienced, fully qualified instructors w ill only be too pleased to assist you in gaining the maximum
benefit from the equipment.
Special Classes Choose an introductory course that's right for you. If you're 14 or 15 come along to one of the junior courses to learn how to use the machines safely and effectively, and if you're 60 or over there is a 60-plus course avail
able. It's never too late to begin an exercise programme and don't worry if you've never used a fitness room before - the comfortable atmosphere and friendly staff w ill soon put you at your ease. Special classes and gym times are available for ladies only. All these courses and more are available for beginners, but if you're experienced in using gym equipment there's a one- and-a-half hour introductory course. If you'd prefer more personal advice you can book a private lesson either individually or with a friend where an instructor w ill devise a fitness pro gramme to suit you and your lifestyle.
