Strange week as leading trio lose

T was a strange week in the Clitheroe and D is t r ic t Snooker League First Divi sion with all three leading sides

I

losing. But table-topping Chatburn A

managed to increase their lead to 10 points despite being well beaten

by Billington A. Second-placed Police were

thrashed by relegation-haunted Waddington A and third-placed

Catholic B were pipped by bottom

side Chatbum B. Rimington A in fourth have had a

remarkable turnaround in their for

tunes. At the start of the year they were

languishing at the foot of the table and looked like relegation candi

dates. Since then they have soared up the

table with an unbeaten record and their latest success - a whitewashing of Clitheroe Conservative - has put them in with an outside chance of sil

verware. Second Division leaders Whalley

Conservative confirmed that they are the best side when they easily beat their nearest rivals Chipping B. With just two games remaining

they must surely go on to take the title.

Seven-try locals record biggest-ever league win

Clitheroe 50 Montell Carrington 10________ _

C L ITH ERO E recorded th e i r biggest-ever league victory on Sat urday as th ey ran in seven tries against Montell a t Littlemoor. The playing conditions were per

fect for Clitheroe's open running style, and the backs took full advan tage of the openings created by the

forwards. Only one team change was made

from the previous week, Martin Wigley coming back into the second row to partner Bob Wilkinson. This, along with the availability of four replacements, gave the impres

sion of a strong line-up. Clitheroe's first try came barely

five minutes into the second half. Mick Rowley crossed for hi3 sixth of the season following good passing

by the three-quarters. Three Declan O'Duffy penalties

took the locals into a 14-3 lead at the 20-minute mark, then Rowley got

back into the act, claiming his second

try of the game. Clitheroe's third score was the best

of the match. Scrum half Dave Watson produced

a little piece of magic with a side step, swerve and a chip, allowing speed merchant Andrew Moorby to win the race and touch down in the

comer. A 21-point half-time lead was

reduced to 14 immediately after the restart, weak tackling letting Mon tell in for their only try. From then on it was a Maroon and

son produced a blockbusting run to score the side's fifth under the posts. Finally, full back Andrew Burrill

scored twice, once in the corner and then to the right of the posts. O'Duffy's third conversion brought

up the 50-point mark. All seven tries were scored by the backs, but all seven were created ini

tially among the forwards. Roger Holmes, Nathan Clark,

Tim Kitchen, and then in the second half, Dave Barnes and Alan Nuttall were always first to the ball in loose

play. This allowed the whole team to

play the game going forward. With only three more league

matches remaining, Clitheroe look certainties for promotion.

score through the middle, it was only when the ball was spun wide that Chris Stott was able to score two good tries, one of which was ably converted by Meadows. Playing against the slope

in the second half, Rossendale drew level with a try and then scored another dubious try which was converted. Clitheroe could have
