MEATBALLS AND TOMATO SAUCE from 10 DOWNING STREET, LONDON

OUR Dish of the Week recipe comes directly from 10 Downing Street, albeit via a newly launched cookery book entitled "A Taste

from Gisbum”. This well-produced book contains

100 original recipes and has been • compiled by Mrs Linda Farnworth and Miss Joanne Fellowes, in order to raise much-needed funds for two worthwhile local causes. Proceeds from the sale of the book

arc to go to the Festival Hall and Memorial Garden funds in the pic

turesque village of Gisbum. Recipes in the book come from

many notable cooks in the village, including Mrs Farnworth, of the Cottage Restaurant, Mrs M. Bargh, of Nappa Manor Farm, Masterchef f inalist Mrs Maureen Bowe and Gary Simkin, head chef, at Abbey Gisbume Park. Among other budding chefs who

feature is our very own Editor, M r Leigh Morrissey, with his Smoked Salmon Pasta; Ribble Valley M P Nigel Evans who supplies a recipe for Orange and Honey Chicken and Lan-

cashire Mash; and the Editor of the Leader Times Series, Mr Roy Pren- ton, who has submitted his favourite

Italian tomato sauce. There are many, many more tried

and tested recipes for you to try. I f you wish to purchase a book they are available from the Old Cottage Restaurant, Gisbum, tel. 01200

THERE is an enormous amount of the wine press devoted to Chile. At the moment it is the "hottest" area in the world, so hot it is cool to drink Chilean wines.

„. Chile is set to break through its cheap imag ,

although there are Chilean wines at currently avail able around the £12 price bracket. W ith the launch in the next few months of two ranges of very exclusive (meaning expensive) wines, the one f[o m Montes, called M , is set to be around £24 a bottle. So where

should we look next for inexpensive wines/ Well, South America does produce wines from mostof

AFTER its 11 Oscar wins, any one who needs any introduction

to the year's - if not the decade's — blockbuster must

have spent the past six months on another planet, if not on the

Titanic itself! The story of the fateful voy

age on the ship that, quite liter ally, went down in history has

finally surfaced in Clitheroe. Although only historians will be

able to judge the historical credibility of the account, no one will be able to resist the heartbreaking tale of for

bidden love. Kate Winslet (who lost out in the , . .. „

"best actress" Oscar category to Helen Hunt) and Leonardo D*Capno gave star performances. Winslet plays a feisty American engaged to a wealthy, but overbearing fellow pas-

senger. W ithout wanting to reveal the

ending, take it from me that the immense amount of water on screen will seem small in comparison to the

floods shed by the audience. The special effects are astounding

"Titanic" - starring Kate Winslet, Leonard DiCaprio, Billy Zane. Directed by James Cameron. The Civic Hall, Clltheroe

In a fit of despair, she attempts to

fling herself overboard to escape the forthcoming marriage, but it s the tra v e l l in g ar tis t, Jack Dawson (DiCaprio), who changes her mind and gives her a new lease of life. Following this meeting, the couple

begin an affair, both of them trying to make love overcome class. Yet, before they have time to change the social climate, fate intervenes and the so-called "unsinkable" ship goes

and well worth the eight-month

shoot and multi-million pound bud- get. N o expense was spared in the production, with every scene includ ing something to take your breath

away. Although experts may not find the , , i

film credible, the historical aspect is only secondary. I t is the love story between Jack and Rose which is of

prime importance. Every actor gave an outstanding

performance and, with a shining soundtrack to boot, the entire film is an unquestionable success from

beginning to end. Louise Hulland W m Dome - MKhry Rourt* m
