School spells out NSPCC support


PUPILS from Read CE Primary School put their writing skills to the test to raise more than


£1,300 for the NSPCC. A sponsored spell was undertaken by the juniors, while .


the infants took part in a wordsearch and after pupils col­ lected their own sponsorship money, they managed to raise a magnificent £1,315.83 in just under three weeks. The school, which raises money for a different children s


charity each year, chose to support the NSPCC after school coordinator Mrs Sharon Pinard gave two separate talks to the infants and juniors on the work done by the


charitvA cheque for £1,295.85 - the balance at the time of the presentation - was made to Mrs Pinard a t a special

THE owner of Clitheroe’s famous sausage shop has featured in yet another TV starring role. Mr Cliff Cowburn, of


Cowman's, was asked to demonstrate sausage mak­


ing in a new educational video which will be shown in food technology lessons in schools nationwide. The video shows how Mr


Cowburn and his two butchers, Gary and John, make their famous prod­ ucts and includes informa­ tion on where he got his ideas for all 58 varieties of sausage on sale in the shop.

Bridge repair work could be on the way


A LETTER sent to Clitheroe Town Council could signify the start of much-needed repair work to the controversial Spring Bridge in Low


Moor.Lancashire County Council has stated that it is willing to consider an application for a definitive map modification order put forward by the town council. In accor­ dance with this, the fate of the bridge will be determined by February 1999. Controversy has surrounded the foot­


bridge, which runs from Riverside, Low Moor, to Edisford on the Waddington


road, as it has slowly become dilapidated. Calls for repair work were put forward


last year by Clitheroe Mayor Coun. John McGowan, but mystery surrounded who


owned the footbridge and whether it was a


public right of way. Clitheroe Town Council submitted a


definitive map modification order so that repair work could be carried out. At the time, Coun. McGowan said th a t the bridge was in need of long-term mainte­ nance and that this depended on whether it was a legitimate right of way. Now the town council has it in writing


that Lancashire County Council will con­ sider the proposal and the outcome could be decided in the next 12 months.
