day has been a tradition for nearly 1,000 years. It originated from the religious fasting period of Lent. Shrove Tuesday always falls on the day before Ash Wednesday, which is the beginning of Lent when fat and meat were not allowed. Women would make savoury pancakes on Shrove Tuesday to use up any left overs from the pre-Lent celebration. Just before noon, the church bells would ring indicating the approach ing end of "shriving" time and the housewives would race to the church clutching their half-finished pancakes and the tradition of pancake races

THE Burgundians have been fortunate, having a string of good vintages and, with a strong pound, most of the prices are similar to last year, so once again we are running an "En Premier" campaign - you pay up front for the wine which will be shipped later in the year, this will be the

cheapest you can ever buy these wines. Hubert Lany, the star wine producers in St Aubin,

(just off to the right of the great Montrachet) made some outstanding 1995/96, which are quite reasonably priced, one of which we have just shipped - 1995 Hautcs-Cotes de Beaune at £6.69. I t is a lightish wine with lovely raspberry fruit flavours, light and oaky. This easy drinking wine is perfect with cold meat dish-

As someone who danced for eight years, watching the dress rehearsal

of this production brought back many memories for me, especially the ballet section. I t is probably every little girl's dream to be a bal lerina, complete with tutu, and those who danced to music from Tchaikovsky's “Nutcracker”

looked just like the real thing. The girls, and the few boys that

perform, were incredibly graceful and synchronised and showed that the four months of rehearsals had definitely paid off. There is a constant smile from every dancer throughout the show

and I was impressed with the way the little dancers, aged from three upwards, were incorporated into i the older ones' routines. This was | especially the case in "Rainbow" where they all performed beautiful ly in their little white dresses, with coloured sashes and hair ribbons depicting the various colours. "Dancing Feet" opens tonight at 7.p.m. with performances tomor

row and Saturday. Tickets are priced at £4 and are
