Stolen van is found

burnt out

A VAN stolen from outside the home of a Barrow cou ple has been found - burnt out. Mr Michael Robinson

and his wife, Irene, had their white Vauxhall Ras cal van taken from Chest nut Crescent in the early hours one morning at the beginning of the month. The van was full of cater ing equipment, used by the couple in their work as out side caterers. Unfortunately, the van

was later found in the Dar- wen area, abandoned and burnt out. Thieves had pushed it down a hill after removing the engine and gear box. The couple's catering equipment was too badly damaged to save. Mr Robinson has vowed

to carry on in business, but described the incident as "a costly blow".

THREE hours of testing table ten nis gave two local players victory

over opponents from a wide area. Adam Wasdell and Andrew Braithwaite

were the toast of schoolmates and staff at Bowland High School, Grindieton. They were winners of the two year 11

boys' singles prizes in a tournament for schools in the Blackburn, Accrington and Ribble Valley areas. The tournament was played over four nights at the table tennis centre at

Church, Accrington. Bowland pupils were losing finalists in

other age ranges. Adrian Marsden and David Fawcett

were in the year 10 finals and Alistair Har rison and Steven Wilson in the years seven and eight. The school has a long table tennis tradi

tion and won two major contests last year. Coaching is provided by staff members Messrs Roy Barton and Ken Croydon. Pictured are Adam, left, and Andrew.

Schools get money from bank as part of conservation awards scheme

FOUR Ribble Valley schools are to receive a total of £350 as part of the 12th Yorkshire Bank Conservation Awards Scheme. Barrow Controlled Pri

mary School, Whalley; Pendle County Primary School, Clitheroe and St Michael and St John's RC Primary School, Clitheroe,

will receive grants of £100 to improve their pond and wildlife areas. Grindieton CE Primary School will be given £50 to improve its wildlife meadow. More than £48,000 is

available this year to schools all over the country to improve conservation

areas and awareness. The scheme, run in con

junction with the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV), has given awards totalling more than £200,000 to more than 4,000 schools over the last 12 years. It supports projects which enable pupils to become involved in environmental conservation programmes of benefit to them and

their local community. The grants have been

used to plant trees, create habitats for birds, insects

and other animals, for planting wildflower mead ows and for building ponds. Many schools are now

using their wildlife areas as outdoor classrooms, where pupils learn maths and sci ence.
