Poor finishing sees locals miss out

Clitheroe 6 North Manchester 14

CLITHEROE let two league points slip through their fingers against North

Manchester on Saturday. Poor handling was unfortunately the

locals' trademark as the three-quarters dis played it in open play and the forwards at

close quarters. The first 20 minutes, however, indicated

anything but a defeat. The game was played almost exclusively in

the North Manchester half, with Clitheroe hav

ing the lion's share of possession. The old Clitheroe failing of not converting

pressure into points was never more true. Two Declan O'Duffy penalties were scant

reward for the effort put in by the likes of Harry Proctor, Alan Nuttall and Roger

Holmes.By half-time, the score was all-square at 6- 6.The second half was just as evenly con tested. Both sides made a couple of clear-cut

handling by the backs to see Thomas again released down the wing to score his second

try of the game. The first half ended with the forwards

beginning to dominate the set plays and putting in some bone crunching tackles. The second half started with Clitheroe

match to make it 14-6. There can be no faulting the effort put in

by the majority of the Clitheroe side, and fit

ness levels looked good. The areas that let the team down were the

on-field decision making. Too often the wrong option was chosen

and either possession squandered or try-scor ing chances went begging. North Manchester 5 Clitheroe Cavaliers 31________________

full-back Stott received a poor clearance and 29 players watched in amazement as he jinked, side-stepped and baffled the opposi tion with his turn of speed to score a superb solo try under the posts only to fail miserably with his own conversion attempt. Clitheroe’s complacency allowed North
