birthday game which resulted in not such a happy birthday. He was aware that his queen was under attack and after deciding how to play the next few moves, obviously starting by making a queen move, he picked up a knight. The rule is that you must move a piece if you touch it. His queen was lost and so was the game. On board one John

Accrington and Rossendale College were presented with the National Beacon Award for Health and Community Care at a spe cial ceremony, which was also attended by guests from ELTEC, ELCS, and

local schools. The "tutor training for deaf people" course, which has been run all over the coun ty by staff from the college, trains members of the deaf community to put on learning programmes which will help other deaf people to develop healthy

lifestyles. The 10 tutors who have

already been trained have personal understanding of the needs and problems faced by deaf people and can speak to them using British Sign Language. A second group of tutors is now undergoing training and further qualifications are being developed. Accrington and Rossendale College faced stiff competi tion to win the coveted award and their achieve ment, which was announced at the Associa tion of Colleges Confer ence, reflected the very high quality of the unique initiative.
