Local rockers Lt Pigeon make it a live

night out for charity LOCAL rockers Lieutenant Pigeon headlined an "elec tric" evening of musical entertainment for a Clitheroe special needs sup ported housing agency. The rock band, which

played for free, really struck a chord with the families and clients of Clitheroe-based Castle Supported Housing Limited. The voluntary organisation, which is a reg istered charity, helps people in the area who have learn ing disabilities live indepen dently from their families. The event, which took place at Clitheroe Catholic Social Club, on Lowergate, was organised to help-families with disabled sons and daughters integrate with others. Also performing was the Longridge-based special needs drama group Alpha, whose old-time style musical

MP’s wind turbine concerns to be taken up

by ministers THE concerns of Rib- ble Valley MP Nigel Evans over the pro posed building of wind turbines in the area are to be taken up by the relevant ministers, according to Leader of the House of Com mons, Margaret Beck

ett MP. Mr Evans sought a

debate on the Govern ment's energy policy during business questions in the Commons. He commented: "I have made my views, concerning the use of wind turbines to generate elec tricity, extremely clear to this Government. An urgent review of wind tur bine policy is needed, as their use is just a nod to the green lobby and causes enormous environmental damage. "In the Ribble Valley, we

turbines near .Chipping. Now there are proposals to erect them in the shadow of Pendle Hill." He added: "Turbines are

have already had to fight off proposals to erect wind

big and ugly and they add little to our energy needs. If Pendle Hill becomes a home for these wind tur bines, then where next? We must ensure that the Ribble Valley does not become a wind turbine haven and we must fight to protect the natural splendour of its land. "If the Government

would only divert a fraction of the money it is spending on wind turbines into ener gy conservation measures then the energy saved would obviate any need for the erection of these ugly blots on the landscape."

It was a good chance for people to get together and see how the organisation supports other people. It gave them the opportunity to talk to other families whose sons and daughters have moved on and see how they are getting along." Our picture shows the

Residents’ fears over prospect of village 'mini airport’ if landing pad is given the green light

b y T im P ro c te r

SOME people in Langho are worried that a "mini air port" would be created if a helicopter landing pad was

allowed just off the A59. With council officials con

cerned at widespread noise nui sance already experienced else where in the Ribble Valley, plan ning councillors are being recom mended to tu rn down Mr J. Clarke's application a t their meeting tonight. A report for the Planning and

Development Committee says that the application does not give any details of work which might be needed to house a small two-seater machine at Longsight House, off the A59 at the entrance to Langho Centre. The landing and take-off area

wealthy people live in the immedi ate locality, which could eventual ly result in a mini airport." The safety of people in the

would be 25 metres in diameter in part of a paddock at the side of the detached property, which is in open countryside. The parish council and 16 near

by residents have objected to the plan. The council report says that one concern people expressed is that it would be a precedent "for others to use the facility as other

vicinity was also.questioned by residents. The Civil Aviation Authority suggested that, if the application was to be granted, it would be prudent for the council to discuss with the helicopter pilot or operator the potential for risk to people on the nearby playing field and how that risk, if present, could be managed. The council's Environmental

Health Officer told his planning colleagues that recent experiences with motorised aircraft at Chip

ping Glider Club and helicopters at Barrow, Chipping and Bolton- by-Bowland clearly indicated that widespread nuisance could be caused. The report says that the appli

cant plans about 150 flights each year and has conceded that visit ing aircraft using the site for the first time would possibly circle the landing area to assess the right approach. Refusal was recommended because of the effect on residential amenity and because drivers on the adjoining trunk road would be distracted, to the detriment of highway safety.

Early start for firework

festival FIREWORKS fans need an early tea if they are to stake their claim for a good spot a t tonight's town bonfire. The fire will be lit at 6-30

pan., while the firework dis play will rocket into action from 7-15 p.m., when Mr Ian Sutheran, general works manager at Castle Cement, will set off the first maroon. His company is sponsoring the event, which is taking place in Clitheroe Castle grounds. There is no formal admis

sion charge, but organisers the Rotary Clubs of Chthcroe and Ribblesdale, the Rotaract Club of the Ribble Valley, Clitheroe Lions and Clitheroe Round Table are hoping visitors will each donate £1. All money raised will be donat ed to local charities. Anyone with spare wood

can add it to the bonfire from 10 a.m. onwards. For safety reasons, no other materials will be accepted. There is also a site ban on personal fireworks, includ ing sparklers.

Summonses

withdrawn SUMMONSES of failing to comply with a local author ity planning enforcement notice against Sheila and John Life, of Chadwicks Farm, Settle Road, Bolton- by-Bowland, have been withdrawn by Blackburn magistrates at the written request of Ribble Valley Borough Council.
