Coveted trophy is awarded to stalwart quarry chief Keith
LANCASHIRE quarrymen are among the best in Britain - and Castle Cement quarry manager Mr Keith Hall has the prestigious
trophy to prove it. Mr Hall, who stepped down as
chairman of the Institute of Quarry- ing’s Lancashire branch in April, was
presented with the president’s branch trophy, after judges recognised its per formance, progress and initiative over
the past year. The trophy itself is made from 6,000-
year-old bog oak and 13 different kinds of stone, representing each branch, and is currently taking pride of place in Mr Hall’s office at the Ribblesdale works. A committee member for 15 years, Mr Hall held the post of chairman for two
years and still carries out his duties as treasurer and dinner dance organiser. The accolade is even more special as it
is only the second year that it has been awarded, the first occasion being last year when the annual conference was held in Waddington.

Inspector upholds appeal which will tidy 'hobby’ farm
A "RAMSHACKLE" collection of hobby enter prise farm buildings at Chaigley would be improved by an extension, a Government inspec
tor has ruled. Ribble Valley Borough
Council was told by the county’s officials that there was no agricultural justification for a hay storage unit and slurry pit at a holding off Crooked Field Lane, Chaigley. So it refused
permission. But inspector Mr D. R.
Chief Executive of the Design Council, said: "I am delighted th a t Heart of Lancashire has been announced as a Millennium Project and is going to form part of our collection of the most innovative products and services created in Britain for the new Millen nium."
Cullingford felt that, despite the severely restric tive planning policies in this area of outstanding natual beauty, the poten tial for improvement justi fied the very modest works applied for by Mr Michael
Ball. The inspector pointed
out that, although the small complex was untidy, it remained relatively incon spicuous, due to its modest size and position behind hedges and in a gentle fold on the landscape. However,

he emphasised the desirabil ity of improving the appearance of the block- work bays, saying: "They are roofed with heavy wood en timbers and corrugated cladding, shorn up with metal sheets and various boards; they lie in a seeping sea of slurry. They house some bedraggled pigs, hay, straw and bits of equip ment; back in February, cattle had been the focus of this 'hobby' enterprise. It is clear th a t the buildings incorporate no adequate drainage and the represen tations indicate that there are occasions when slurry runs down Crooked Field

details of the proposals would need to be agreed with the council. But he granted outline permission
for a suitable scheme which should serve to improve the welfare of the animals, the operation of this “hobby” enterprise, the amenities of those who live nearby and the charm of Crooked Field
