Clltheroe Advertiser & Times, October 30th, 1997 9 Clltheroe 422324 (Editorial), 422323 (Advertising), Burnley 422331 (Classified) Clitheroe is tops for shops as well by Vicky Carlin

CLITHEROE is the tops for shops — and th a t’s officiall

The town has been highlight ed on many occasions as hav ing the North’s leading shops and, according to The Times newspaper, it is now on the menu for food and drink gourmets across the country.

The Times” weekend guide to the “newest, best and most talked about places to eat, drink. and shop”, the North-West spot light highlighted several estab lishments in Clitheroe and the surrounding area. The Spread Eagle Hotel, at Saw-

ley, was hailed a culinary centre of excellence and the varied menu certainly tickled the tastebuds of the visiting Times gourmet. The popular country inn is run by Mr Steven Doherty and his wife,

APPEARING in the good taste directory is the latest of many accolades for the King Street wine merchants run by brothers Andrew and Philip Byrne. The shop was founded in 1879 by their great-grandfather, Mr Denis Byrne, then stocking just five or six different wines for supply to the local gentry.

Since then, the stock has expanded somewhat and, in the last 10 years, the company has achieved almost international recognition. , Currently the North of England Wine Merchant of the Year, the store has just had its entry into the Which? Wine Guide for 1998 confirmed.

As well as being mentioned in the Taste of The Times, D. Byrne and Co. has also become a hit with Times wine columnist and television presenter Jancis Robinson. Miss Robinson popped into the Ribble Valley recently to film the store for a programme to be shown on the BBC next year. ,'The business is renowned far and wide for its'displays and has won.the national Bordeaux Window Dressing Competition on three occasions, as well as being named Top Northern Wine Mer chant in 1990 by the Which? Wine Guide and the county’s Inde pendent Wine Merchant of the Year in 1994 by Lancashire Life magazine.
