I had never liked Primeras...
L
ET me lay my cards on the table before I start. I have never liked Primeras - they were boxy,
unstylish, uninspired and neither mid-car size or large car size. They were just simply a carl Right up to three days before my test
drive, I adhered to that opinion. That was until I saw a striking blacVcar with alloys and spoiler pass me in the street with a more than impressive rate of acceleration. The colour was passionate, the shape
inspiring and the car certainly had a pres ence.
i . As I glanced at the rear of the car, I saw
it was the new Primera SLX. I had not realised Nissan had so radically changed its image. If was like transforming Wayne Sleep into Harrison Ford. As I saw the 2.0i badge on the side of the car, a grin appeared out of nowhere. It
was the SLX I was to test drive. On the day of the test drive, I parked my
humble little Fiesta and walked towards the showroom. On the'way, there was a vari- - ely of cars to greet me. However, out of the whole lot, one particularly appealed to me. • It was a jet black Primera SLX 2.0i with
alloys but no spoiler. Call it luck or intu ition, but I knew that car was to be mine for the day - and it wasl Nissan build their cars at tangents from
the 1.6 box standard model. They build on one tangent towards luxury and elegance, while the other side is the more sporty and cosmetic style of car.
, For example the SLX and SRi ore differ
ent aesthetically internally ond externally, but the engine; suspension, chassis and all the mechanical aspects are exactly the same. . Therefore you have the same excellent
performance for a'disceming driver con cerned with comfort and modesty as you have for a driver concerned with looks and the feel of a sports car. I adjusted the seat and mirrors, turned
the ignition and, instantly, felt the grunt from the 2 .0 i, four cylinder, DO H C

Nissan Primera SLX ■
I placed a tape in the cassette deck and
the Manic Street Preachers hit me like a punch in the head. I sped off with a grin the size of Macclesfield on my face. The 0-62 m.p.h. figure is booked at a
very impressive 9.6 seconds, with the top speed at 127 m.p.h. Believe me when I say these are accurate figures. Mum's the word if you know what I mean. Inside, the SLX has everything you
would expect for a £16,000 or £17,000 executive car.-
, , j Excellent stereo, which is very impor
tant, air conditioning and much, much, more. Granted, the interior of the car pales
in comparison to the exterior, but as you can see from the photo this by no way means the interior is sub-standard.- ■ Due to the new multi-link suspension on
the Primera, it drives away smoother than ever - even at high speeds. While on the M65; the car excelled:'It
took me to the boundaries of self-control, to stay under the speed limit. . -v ; Anyway let me move on. A.O<52 figure
of 9.6 seconds is impressive. ‘ However, what some cars lack is decent
pick-up from 62-100. The Primera's top end acceleration was simply breathtaking. If you purchase a Primera, you must
., choose to have the alloys. I know that on some cars brakes showing behind alloys does not look quite right, but on the Primera this only extenuates the beauty-of
the car. - ; You would be right in thinking that
have not provided much technical infor mation on specification, but all this is irrel evant if you did not like the look of the car or enjoy driving it. I advise you to go and test drive the car
at D. C. Cook, of Blackburn, who kindly allowed me to take the car for a day. You could well be, like me, converted , into a Primera fan
