pressure on Clitheroe

Colne and Nelson 8 Clitheroe 6

IT was a case of so near and yet so far

for Clitheroe on Saturday. They made the short trip to Colne and

Nelson but returned empty-handed, suffer ing only their first league defeat of the sea son.

; Results so far this season indicated it

would be a close game, and i t could have been no closer at half-time with the score

standing at 0-0. Neither side gained control of the ball in

a scrappy first 40 minutes, which was more surprising considering the perfect condi

tions. Clitheroe did take the lead early in the

second half from a Kris Tyas penalty. In football, a team is of ten at their most;

vulnerable after scoring, and the Littlemoor

men showed this also applies to rugby. Almost immediately from the restart,

Colne scored an unconverted try, and the score remained 5-3 until five minutes from time.

. . The final moments saw Clitheroe's best

rugby. Forwards Isherwood, Nuttall and Barnes

supported breaks by Ian Fielding and Steve Graham to set up a maul just inside the

opponents'half. /

Up stepped f ly half maestro Declan O'Duffy, who slotted over an awesome drop

goal. The Maroon and Golds took the lead at

6-5 with seconds remaining. There was just enough time for Clitheroe.

to make a mess of the restart and allow the Colne f ly half to win the match with his own drop kick. A fte r a disappointing, but not disas

trous result, the next three games are vita l i f Clitheroe are to maintain their challenge at the top of North Lancashire

Division Two. On Saturday Clitheroe travel to Bur-

COLNE and Nelson second string

were no match for Clitheroe Cavaliers. The visitors won the toss and forced,

Clitheroe to play into the sun but they were. unable to gain any advantage.

. ■ : Colne had a ve ry large pack, but th e .

mobile Cavalier forwards dominated in : both loose and set play.

George Giles partnered Nick Green in . the second row and Tim Hitchen made a ;

welcome return at wing-forward. Mike Chambers gamely went to prop and •

the versatile Paul Proctor deputised at hooker.; Colne and Nelson were certainly n o .

pushover and only strong defensive tack- • ling, especially by Steven Greatorex, pre-. vented them scoring.

• I t took Clitheroe 20 minutes to claim the:

first points via a Slinger penalty and then a familiar pattern emerged. The Cavaliers took quick tap penalties to .

drag the heavy Colne forwards around the: field and Taylor burst through to score. ... Before half-time Clitheroe added two more;

tries from winger Andy Bond, who is growing in confidence with every game, and the best, try of the afternoon came from David Slither,; which was even applauded by the opposition.:

■ Along with two conversions the Cavaliers 1 led by 22-0 at the interval.

and the crowd gasped with disbelief as the burly forward showed real finesse with some.

classic kicking from the base of the scrum. - Full-back Simon Gretton was also in fine

form helping the Cavaliers to their second clean sheet in two weeks. A t the final whistle the scoreboard read 32-

0 with the littlemoor supporters being treat- • ed to another ruthless Cavalier performance..
