Blues need winning run to stay in title hunt
C L ITH E RO E go into the next three North-West Counties’ League games knowing they need a winning run to keep up with the leading pack.
By Justin Connolly The Blues stand in eighth spot in the
latest table and are already 14 points behind leaders Kidsgrove. But with three league games in the next week the Shawbridge outfit could make
inroads into that lead. Co-manager Denis Underwood said:
“Over the next few weeks all the sides at
the top have to play each other. “We’ve got to make sure we win our
games while the other sides drop points. “We have a league game on Saturday

Rimington go nap happy
Mill Hill St Peter’s 0 Rimington 5
DESPITE being without five regu lar first team players an under strength Rimington still proved too
strong for a struggling Mill Hill side. Throughout the opening minutes
Rimington found it very difficult to play good football on what was proving to be a very humpy surface. T h e home team were content to
defend most of the time and happily knocked long balls, the m ajo rity of which ran straight through to Riming-
ton’s keeper Dave Binns. This was the pattern of most of the
game with Rimington forcing play and creating all the chances. Watkins, Young and Leach all went
close before Geldard put the viators ahead from the penalty spot after 20 minutes.
Gordon Leach should have made it 2-
0 a minute later, but his overhead kick was superbly headed off the line by a
Mill Hill defender. Rimington, however, did go further
ahead in the 25th minute when Farnsworth’s shot took a deflection to beat the home keeper and give the visi tors a two-goal cushion at the interval. In the second half Rimington contin
ued to force the pace with Eric Geldard controlling things from midfield and Geoff Young continually causing prob-
■ iems for the Mill Hill defenders. Geldard scored Rimington’s third
goal on the hour with a well-struck shot from just outside the opposition’s penal-
tyarea. In the final half hour Rimington cre
ated a string of scoring chances which were either narrowly missed or well saved by the goalkeeper.
Rimington’s fourth goal was scored in
the 75th minute by Trevor Watkins, and two minutes later he narrowly missed completing his hat-trick when his free kick went just over the crossbar. Minutes la te r T re vo r Watkins
became a firm favourite to win the square-ball award for this season when he scooped the ball over the bar from a position directly underneath it following
a superb headed pass from Geoff Young. With five minutes to go Craig Barnes
scored Rimington’s fifth goal to complete a comprehensive victory for the visitors.
This was a good workman-like per
formance from Rimington with their defence once again looking strong and restricting Mill Hill to having just one scoring chance throughout the game and leaving Dave Binns in the Riming ton goal a virtual spectator throughout
the match.

HE romance of the cup left the De Lacy Arms on doud
nine and Judge Walmsley
brokenhearted. The Judge men lost out by
the odd goal in seven having fought their way back to level
from a three goal deficit. The match turned into a
classic cup thriller hanging in the balance right up to the last
minute when De Lacy’s Lee Burgess joyfully fired home
the winner. Until that point it seemed
the Judge outfit were going to pull off an escape to victory coming back from the brink of a stinging derby defeat. I t had been De Lacy who
started the brighter with Judge keeper Paul Hoole being forced into making some impressive blocks when De Lacy’s front men, who looked dangerous going forward every time, seemed certain to score. But the 19-year-old keeper
w i l l want to forget his appalling blunder that gifted De Lacy the lead after 20 min
utes. A misdirected pass was
harmlessly lobbed into the home team’s box, where Hoole climbed to catch the hall. He dropped the ball in front
of one of his defenders, and a blind panic seemed to beset him as he fumbled and flapped, then inexplicably pushed the ball away into the path of Craig Barnes, who must have thought Christmas had come early, as he tapped the ball into the open net with no one anywhere near him. I f De Lacy’s first goal was farcical their second, a penalty,
was controversial. The referee awarded the
spot-kick after Wez Clarkson was deemed to have handled the ball, even though it had appeared to have struck him on the right shoulder. Despite loud protests from
the Judge players, the referee was having none of it, and De Lacy striker Warren sent the keeper the wrong way. The Billington boys were
battling hard looking to spring the De L a c y defence with some neat flick-ons, but the De Lacy back four were giving Judge little change and the Whalley men’s forceful mid- field were doing a good job of snuffing out any meaningful movement from the opposi
tion. A t 2-0 at half-time Judge
were down but not out, and they started the second-half with extra rip. But, after five minutes they
took a sucker-punch, when De Lacy’s Paul Whaling found himself in front of goal with more time and space than any
striker should ever have. He managed to get his shot
in before losing his footing, but Hoole managed to parry only for the sprawling Whaling to use his nous to shin the ball into the far comer while still on the ground. Judge heads dropped but
only for a while, before the commanding Chris Stanley cooly brought down the ball m the box and rifled a shot past the diving De Lacy keeper. Judge now had something
to go for and at last began to look threatening. The pressure nearly paid
dividends as Seedall floated a curling corner which Chris Stanley sent crashing against the cross bar, the ball came fly
ing back into play off the goal
line before being cleared. A few minutes later saw
Judge get their deserved sec ond, when Charlie Street
struck a low shot with venom from the edge of the box.
_ , With 10 minutes to go the
game really took off as Judge pressed hard for the equaliser. Chris Stanley went inches
wide with a header from another superb Seedall comer. The game was made level
by the goal of the match when Seedall looped in a cross from
10 yards over the half way line plum onto the boot of Antho ny Clarkson, who volleyed exquisitely from just mside the
box. The Judge men went wild
and the scene was set for a grand-stand finish. A frenetic fiv e miutes
ensued, with the play running from one end to the another. With less than a minute
remaining D e L a c y won a throw in on the left ride more than 30 yards out from goal. The ball was launched into
the penalty area, and an unfor tunate back-header from one
of the Judge defenders looped back on to the boot of Lee Burgess who left Hoole with l it t le chance, as the Judge players sank to their knees in
despair. Swan at Whalley 7 New Inn 0
OVER confidence against ((supposedly inferior oppo sition has often been the undoing of the Whalley side, but on Sunday they cruised into the next round of the cup after a rout against their Clitheroe
rivals. Stafford Linford, who had a
long career with Swan, had the honour of captaining the visi tors, and it was New Inn who dominated the opening period of the game. Mark Taylor was forced
into making the first save of the game when Dave Longair found himself with time and space in the area. This seemed to kick-start
the Swan engine room and soon Sam Chapman gave the favourites the lead with a breathtaking volley on the turn from 12 yards. Steven Czapowski’s comer- kicks had started to cause the
■ Second Divirion outfit real dif ficulties and a second goal arrived from one after 25 min
utes. Dominic Chapman was the
beneficiary in bizarre circum stances when the ball seemed to strike the big defender in the face before flying into the top comer of the net. The pressure was now inces
sant and midfield general David Cooke added a third from another Czapowski cor ner.
Brendan McGee had been
given a chance to stake a claim for one of the striker’s berths on a more permanent basis and his unique style helped put Whalley four in front by half-time. This time a New Inn defender added the final touch. In the second half Swan
looked capable of running up a cricket score, but to their cred it New Inn never declared and eventually created scoring chances of their own. Czapowski finally scored
himself, inevitably direct from a right-wing corner, and Dominic Chapman slotted home a penalty. Ram Chapman also capped
a fine individual display with another rocket volley.
The match came to life
again in the dying minutes when Dominic Chapman con ceded a penalty to give the vis itors a chance of a consolation. However Taylor had not
read the script and earned himself the man-of-the-match award with a wonder save

when a lot of the other sides are in Vase games, so there is another opportunity to close the gap. “We are still not half way and there is a
very long way to go. "Kidsgrove were beaten by Vauxhall on Saturday, so they are back in the melting
pot now. “We play them a week on Saturday and
that will be a very important game.” The Clitheroe boss says he and co-man-
ager Gary Butcher are still in the hunt for new blood to strengthen their squad.
New signing Chris Stampton, a left sided defensive player, was one new face in
the line-up this week. “ I still have a few irons in the fire - 1
should learn in time for Saturday whether a player I want from Glossop can play for us” said Denis.
said Denis.
“T am having to go a little further afield for new players now, but I am still looking
to improve the squad.” The need for a strong squad has never been better illustrated than by the events
of this week. “We had a few injuries going into Satur
day’s game at Haslingden, and we picked
up a few more in that game. “So on Tuesday at Darwen we had four
young players making their debut. “One of the most encouraging things
was that they performed very well. “The young players tend to listen more to what you ask them to do and actually
try to do it.” Clitheroe performed superbly against
Darwen to recover a 2-0 deficit and tri umph 3-2 to go into the next round of the
Floodlit Trophy. “The game two weeks ago was a bit of a
farce,” said Denis. “We ended up with nine men and actu
ally looked better than they did with a full
team. "Some of the players thought there was
a bit of a score to settle on Tuesday, but thankfully we punished them with good
football. “ I was delighted with the result, espe
cially when the team we put out was not,
on paper at least, our best ride. “On Saturday at Haslingden it was a
different story. “We didn’t play well and lost the lead
twice. _ “ I t was a poor pitch and I think we
were guilty of overplaying it at times. “When we missed out the midfield and got the ball to the forwards we
looked decent. "Tha t ’s how we got our goals, even
though it doesn’t look good to the specta tors.”
The injury situation is beginning to . . . .
clear up for the Clitheroe boss. “ Clive Dunn should be OK for Satur
day, as should Mark Walsh,” he said. “Paul Lynch will be another week, as
1 will Neil Baron and Jon Penman is due
to start training again next week. “Andy Taylor went off on Tuesday,
night with a recurrence of an old injury, which is a bit worrying, but overall the
situation is getting better.” Clitheroe’s home match with War
rington Town on Saturday kicks-off at 3 p.m. On Tuesday night they visit Black pool Rovers and that game has a 7-30
p.m. kick-off. • Clitheroe's aggregate win over Dar wen in Tuesday night’s Floodlit Trophy tie earns then a second round clash with

bridge during the week commencing
December 1st. • Clitheroe’s revised fixtures for November are:

Clitheroe needed something special. In the f irs t leg two weeks ago at Shawbridge luck was very much against
them. They had a man sent off and four put
out of the game with injury, forcing them to battle on with just nine men in the dying stages. But on Tuesday the luck was with them. Darwen created chances, but missed
them, and Paul Mullin scored one of Clitheroe’s goals off his chest,
Injuries had forced Clitheroe man
agers Denis Underwood and Gary Butcher to field no fewer than fiv e
reserve team players. ' Darwen were first to attack and pro
duced a good chance which saw the ball
go just over the bar. Mullin should have put Clitheroe a
goal to the good minutes later, but he
fired wide from close range. But despite Darwen’s early pressure
it was Clitheroe who broke the deadlock after just 10 minutes. Gary Thomas was the man to get the
Blues back in the tie with a terrific lob over the keeper from 10 yards. Darwen began to struggle to put any
passing moves together and the game became scrappy after the goal.
A mistake by the Darwen keeper let Mullin in just before the break to put
Clitheroe 2-0 up on the night and level
onaggregate. The early stages of the second half
saw Darwen put Clitheroe’s defence under some pressure, as they had in the
first half. Poor finishing let. them down again,
and Clitheroe stayed in the hunt. The Blues went in front for the first
time in the tie after 57 minutes. The keeper once again failed to clear
the ball properly and the ball landed at the feet of Jon Riley - he fired the ball first time into the back of the net. W ith time running out Darwen
became desperate for a goal and should have scored when Denny Khan ran down the right, cut inside and with the goal at his mercy shot wide. But Clitheroe held out until the final
whistle to seal a great victory. Blues held by lowly rivals
Haslingden 2 Clitheroe 2
CLITHEROE took the lead, and lost it twice, to take a point from their visit to Haslingden
on Saturday. The Blues brought in new signing
Chris Stanton from Liverpool side Preesall and also Reserve team regu lars Steve Elmer and Steve Gough. On the bench was injured leading
scorer Mark Walsh. The first chance of the game fell to
Dennis Hill when he struck a fine free- kick which skimmed the post.
Minutes later Jon Parrott in the Haslingden goal pulled off a fine save
from Andy Taylor. Clitheroe were well on top, but on a
rare excursion forward former Clitheroe player Mark Stewart was unlucky to see his first-time shot blocked. On 28 minutes Paul Mullin netted
his second goal of the season with a fine volley which he struck into the
roof of the net. Clitheroe could have been two up
by half-time when Hill — Clitheroe’s most dangerous player - was unlucky
to see his shot come back off the post, Haslingden came out stronger for ,
the second half and soon carved out a good opening.
, A Stewart shot hit a post with
Blues keeper John Morrey well beat en.

Reserve Division leaders Clitheroe put last week’s defeat well and truly behind them with an emphatic win over third-
placed Woodley Sports. Every player performed to
a high standard and the visi tors had no answer to the slick passing and movement
of the reserves. They opened the scoring
when Danny Lord hit a free- kick from 20 yards and strik er Dave Horrocks was on hand to deflect it into the net. Gary Thomas scored the
second after Shaun Lister placed a perfect pass into his stride and Thomas rounded the keeper to slot the ball into the net. W oodley pulled a goal
back when le e Dobson was adjudged to have pushed a striker in the area.
Th e resulting penalty gave keeper Andy Morris no
chance. Minutes later the two goal
lead was restored when Thomas broke free and passed to fellow-striker Horrocks who, despite slipping, man aged to riot the ball home. Another goal followed in a bizarre fashion just before
half-time. A back-pass was missed
by the keeper and as he tried to recover he found himself in a race for the goal-bound ball with Thomas. The ball was adjudged to
be over the line as both play ers ended up in the back of
the net. The keeper argued that he
had cleared it, but the referee gave a goal and the reserves went in at half-time 4-1 to the
good. Th e team kept up the
pressure in the second half and mid-way through Thomas got his second with a shot from the edge of the
area and with 10 minutes to go Simon Pickles scored with a header from a cross from
Thomas. Woodley did m an a g e :
another goal in the 90th minute, hut by then they had resorted to hacking the Clitheroe team down in des- ' peration. Overall the result was
excellent and the perfor mance impressive. • On Saturday the Reserves
are away to Ashton Town. The match has a 3 p.m. kick off.
The team have been drawn
against Ramsbottom United Reserves in the North-West Counties’ Reserve Division
Cup. Clitheroe were runners-up
to Trafford in the competi tion last season and will be looking to go one better this time around. The game will be played
on Saturday, November 22nd at 3 p.m. at Ramsbot tom.
Garner fires second half hat-trick for youth team
Clitheroe Youth 4 Burnley Belvedere 1
MATT Gamer fired a second-half hat- trick to give a weakened Clitheroe Youth side a comfortable win over
Burnley Belvedere. The Blues were without several players
who were away in Holland with their school. That meant a number of positional changes. Early on it looked as if Clitheroe would
dominate the game with some promising play and attacking moves which resulted in
them hitting the crossbar. Belvedere were down to 10 men soon after
as they lost a player with a shoulder injury and had no substitutes. Clitheroe’s fighting spirit seemed to be
missing at times throughout the game, but not after 15 minutes when Martin Halleron put his side in front. And it was only too evident on the hall hour when Belvedere, with determination
r and aggression, saw them earn a free-kick on
the edge of the area. A well taken shot to the right-hand comer
of the net saw them level the score at 1-1. From here on in it was Belvedere’s domi
nant play that had Clitheroe defending. But after going down to nine men at the
break with another injury, it was always going to be difficult for them to dominate the
rest of the match. Clitheroe came back into the game and
after 58 minutes Garner slotted home to make the score 2-1. Three minutes later Gar ner popped up again to make it 3-1. Belvedere showed good fighting spirit and
Clitheroe were not helped when Kieran Ans- bro had to come off with a leg injury. With their only sub used five minutes ear
lier, they went down to 10 men. But after 80 minutes Gamer fired his third
and ensured Clitheroe a 4-1 victory. Man-of-the-match fo r Clitheroe was
