Angelo isn’t from Italy, nor any other

more winemakers eager to present their wines from Australia than from any other p a rt of the world.Hav- ing said that, Angelo is the first from Queensland. Angelo’s grandfather went to Queensland in 1930

arid star ted a small vineyard as a farmer, not as a winemaker. Later, his father took over producing large quantities of table wine and, when he acquired the business in the early 1960s, realised the area’s potential for wine production. He's tar ted importing good quality vine stock from

“down South” and set himself very strict quantity controls. His vision and hard work achieved dividends in 1974, when he won bronze awards in the Brisbane Show, followed by gold awards a year later, which really put him on the map.

C l i th e r o e (01200 2 3 152) The wine I am recommending this week is Bal-

landean Estate Queensland Cabernet (£5.29), which is produced from a blend of two-thirds Carbernet Sauvignon and a third Malbec. The grapes are well suited to the high altitude conditions of the Granite

Belt. This wine has a rich, plum-red colour and a her

bal, spicy aroma. I t is not quite as heavy as many Australian reds, having greater finesse and lovely, spicy fruit flavours, finished with “chocolatey^oak”. I t is perfect with game (for example, England

versus Scotland!) or fresh asparagus. Kangaroo fil lets or spicy mango are also highly recommended as accompaniments to this fine wine — and don’t for get Father’s Day (need I say more? Hiccup!).

In my View

I KNOW Shakespeare like the average person does — “Alas poor Yorick”, a few other half quotations and the odd play at school, which put me off th e work of the world’s greatest playwright for many, many years. His language is often unfathom

able to those who have not been tutored in i t and reading it puts ordinary people off viewing his plays. On Monday evening, however, I

saw a performance of “A Midsum m e r N ig h t ’s D r e am ” w hich brought to life the words of the bard in a magical way. My stic ism and magic were

sp rinkled through the various scones in the park and it lingered

walked between the sets. The players grasped the myriad

imaginings of Shakespeare’s mind, which lo i te r in his pages, and threw them wonderfully at their audience. The play was produced by the

Dukes Playhouse players for the 10th anniversary of the theatre’s promenade plays in Williamson P a rk . D i r e c to r Ia n F o r r e s t decided to set his version of the play, which deals humorously with the themes of love and all its com plications. in Edwardian England.

But the play is still rooted in the late 16th century, where older ideas and beliefs find expression in the imaginative designs, particu larly with regard to the fairies.
