CLITIIEIIOE continued their assault on the top of the Vaux Ribblesdale League table with a fine win over defending champions Padiham a t the Arbories on Sunday. 'I’he bown-i loint victory put Clitheroe in third place, just
two potato behind second-placed Bamoldswick. The performance of the game came from Clitheroe pro- fe.vdonal Jon Fielding, whose 7-67 and 43 not out proved to be the deciding factor. The defeat sees Padiham struggling four places off the
bottom of the Vaux Ribblesdale Senior League with just two wins from eight games so far. Batting first on Saturday, Padiham’s innings really strug gled to get going, with the first three wickets falling cheap
ly- Phil Metcalfe, skipper in the absence of Pankaj Tripathi,
was the first of Fielding’s victims, falling for four when he was caught by Robinson. No more runs had been added by the time Anderson was
bowled by Simon Bishop for 10, and Padiham were reduced to just 18-2. Sharif and Marcus Gee followed in fairly quick succession
to leave Nasir Mehmood and Arbories professional Joe Grant with i t all to do. They delivered the goods, putting together a fine part
nership of 62 before Mehmood was caught by Graham off Fielding for 40. Once th a t partnership was broken the Padiham innings
began to splutter, with Grant bowled by Fielding for 33 four runs after Mehmood was out, and the rest of the

wickets falling fairly rapidly. Of the lower order Kelly top-scored with ju s t nine, as
Fielding and Dewhurst conspired to see the Padiham batsmen off with just 132 on the board.
Clitheroe got off to a fantastic s tar t with openers Mark
Bolton and Robinson piling on an impressive 42 for the first wicket.
Robinson was the first to go for 18 when he became the
first of four wickets for Stephen Gee, Padiham’s most suc cessful bowler on the day.
Collinson provided some support for Bolton, making 12
before Gee trapped him leg before to put Padiham back in the game.
Grant’s only success of the day followed just one run later
when Whalley was bowled without scoring, and Bolton followed soon after for 39 when he was bowled by Gee.
Fielding then produced the innings of the day to guide
his side home to victory, making 43 not out. He was supported first by Neil Bolton (2) and then by
Graham (13 not out), Clitheroe cruised home to a com fortable victory with eight overs to spare.

READ’S second team have not made as good a s ta r t to the season as their first team and went down to another defeat on Saturday. After Read made 143, the opposition batsmen
from Belvedere knocked them off with six wickets in hand to leave Read second from bottom in the Vaux Ribblesdale League Second Division. Ribblesdale Wanderers seconds also went down to
defeat in a tight game against Cherry Tree seconds. Cherry Tree batted first and made 171-8 but the
Wanderers fell 13 runs short with four wickets still left in hand. There was better news for Clitheroe seconds whose
seven-point win over Padiham keeps them a t the top of the First Division. Clitheroe made 242-7 batting first and managed
to restrict Padiham to 146 to cruise to a convinc ing win. Whalley seconds are propping up the Second Divi sion after a close defeat on Saturday a t the hands of
their Salesbury counterparts. Whalley could manage just 117-7 batting first, a
total which Salesbury. passed with just one wicket remaining to deny Whalley what would have been only their second win of the season. In the Third Division 68 from Read third teamer
Hassan could not secure a win for them against Baxenden who claimed the five points. Ribblesdale Wanderers thirds tasted defeat as well
when they visited Cherry Tree. An unbeaten 82 by D. Cottam for Wanderers was not enough to see them past the Cherry Tree total
of 189-6. A five-wicket h au l for Musson play in g for
Clitheroe thirds against Padiham proved in vain as the Ribble Valley side were bowled out for just 94 in reply to Padiham’s 152. In the Lawrenson Cup Read seconds progressed
through to the third round after beating Ribbles dale Wanderers a t Church Meadow. A half-century for Leach helped Wanderers to 218- 7 bu t Read passed th a t score with three wickets
left. Three Ribble Valley players played in the Ribbles
dale League representative side which beat a Sad- dleworth League side in the Manchester Evening News Inter-League Trophy semi-final on Sunday. Terry Little from Read contributed 28 to Rib-
bledale League’s final total of 161-8. David O’Niell of Whalley and Graham Monk of
Ribblesdale Wanderers took two wickets apiece as the Saddleworth side were restricted to 124-9. Graham Monk was p a r t ic u la r ly impressive,
returning figures of 2-10 off his ten overs, helping to reduce Saddleworth to 24-7 a t one stage in their innings.
score the runs needed and throughout their innings i t was a matter of whether Read would bowl them out and take the bonus points, or whether Baxenden, with their nega tive batting, would bat out time and deprive Read of the bowling points. In the end, Read took maximum points with two overs
and two balls to spare. Once again Read professional Shahid Nawaz was in flow
ing form with both bat and ball, hitting 76 with the bat and taking 7-23 with the ball. This overshadowed a gritty unbeaten knock of 106 from
Nick Marsh. Winning the toss and electing to bat, the Read openers
took the score along a t a rate of over five runs per over. An extremely high score looked on the cards with Nawaz and Marsh passing the 150-mark without being separat
ed. However, a t 156, Nawaz was slow getting back to his
crease and opposing professional Andrew Payne threw down the wicket, Nawaz out for 76, passing 500 runs for the season in the process.
. Terry Little joined Marsh, but only 18 runs later Payne
clean bowled the former for two. Peter Usher then hit a t everything, unfortunately for
Read missing the ball on occasions, but mistiming i t on others, and i t was no surprise when he left a t 189, bowled by James Capstick for 11. Steve Rushton joined Marsh, saw Marsh to his hundred,
and they then took the score on to 243-3, with Marsh unbeaten on 106, and Rushton 15 not out. Baxenden’s reply was opened by Collins and his captain
John Bushell. With six on the board,-Collins returned to the pavilion,
bowled by Nawaz for three. New batsman Mark Rushton stayed with his captain
while they added 31 runs, but he was bowled by Nawaz for seven. Payne was next man in and without aggression he and
Bushell took the score on to 57, when Malcolm Heyworth had Bushell caught by Nawaz. Without addition to the score Payne was bowled by
Nawaz for seven. Hargreaves and John Sudworth added another 20 runs
before skipper David Parsons trapped the latter leg before for seven. David Jackson played confidently and gave good support
to Hargreaves, but a t 95 was leg before to Heyworth'for eight.
READ p ro fe s s io n a l S h ah id N aw a z One run later Smith was bowled by Nawaz without scor
ing. Capstick and Hargreaves saw the hundred up, but a t 101
the la t te r was caught in the deep by Marsh for 26 off Nawaz. The Read pro then clean bowled F. Stewart in his next
over without scoring, and wrapped up proceedings by bowling J. Stewart, leaving Baxenden all out for 101.
So Read carry on their winning nm, taking the full points
available once again, but there are manv hard games to be played iu the next couple of weeks.
They have unearthed a gem of a professional in Nawaz, and the side show an air of confidence.
The bad trot continues
RIBBLESDALE Wanderers’ bad s tar t to the season continued on Sat urday with a convincing defeat a t the hands of mid-table Cherry Tree a t Church Meadow. Chasing a total of 164 the Wander
ers crashed to a disappointing 88 all out after some good bowling from the entire Cherry Tree attack. Only the Ribblesdale professional
Gurinder Pal Singh looked capable of rescuing the side, bu t even he suc cumbed after making just 25. C h er ry Tree profes sional S co t t
Pearce made 24 to get the innings off to a good s ta r t supporting skipper
Hayes who made a solid 48. Pearce went first caught by Briggs

off Howard after the opening pair had put on 60. Hayes followed after he and Holroyd
had put on another 29 and i t seemed as if Cherry Tree were headed for a big score.
Holroyd was run out for 21 and the
next two wickets fell cheaply, with Hughes going without scoring and Kennedy being tra p p e d lbw by Monkforl7. Grogan (27 not out) and Elwood (23
no t out) then pushed the score on from 122-5 to 164 by th e time the overs ran out, to s e t Wanderers a testing total. Wanderers first wicket fell for just
two runs when Hughes bowled open er Howard before he had the chance to get off the mark. The score had progressed on to 30 by
bowled by Hayes without scoring before keeper Rain provided some cheer with a stubborn 15 before being
rim out. The remaining wickets fell quickly and
regularly with just Monk a t number ten making it into double figures. Wilson hung around for just five runs
while the last few wickets fell a t the other end, with Ramsker coming on to take two wickets in his one and only over without conceding any runs to tie up the innings. The Ribblesdale batting had fallen well
the time Davies was out lbw to Simp son and Briggs followed soon after, bowled by Hayes with ju s t eight more runs added to the score. When professional Singh was caught
by Ramsker off the bowling of Simp son for 23 things began to look omi nous for the home side. Ribblesdale skipper Proctor was
short of the required total, giving Cher ry Tree a valuable seven-point win which propelled them into tenth spot in the table after a poor start. Only Whalley, without a win or a point this season, keep Wanderes off the bot
tom of the table, leaving the Church Meadow side with much room for improvement in a season which promised much but has so far failed to . deliver. ,
