IT has taken almost 12 months for the Government to reply to a report on the burning of secondary liquid fuels in cement kilns — and its findings are certainly not to the liking of Ribble Val

the results of surveys carried out by the former HMIP, now the E n v i ro nm e n t Agency, which found no evidence of increased admissions to hospitals, increased prescription of anti-asthma thera pies or increase levels of asthma in the areas where secondary liquid fuels had been burnt. The Ministry of Agriculture,
Fisheries and Food analysed milk from a number of farms in the vicinity of Castle Cement's works, in the knowledge that secondary liquid fuels had been used in the plant for nearly two years prior to milk s am p l in g . The lev e ls of dioxins, heavy metals and arsenic were typical of those found in milk elsewhere in the United Kingdom and MAFF stated that it had no plans to include fur ther cement kilns using secondary liquid fuels in its programme of monitoring of milk produced in the vicinity of potential sources of dioxins and/or metals. “THE biggest thing since the Wombles” is how “The Treacle People”, the tale of imaginary folk from Sabden, is being described. I t is now half way through its first series on
ITV and producers are delighted by the viewing figures being achieved by the stories of treacle mining folk. Already they are matching those achieved by BBC1 competition. Mr Bill Dewhurst, the creator of the series, is
thrilled. He said: “I t is a rip-roaring success, very, very successful." He is confident enough of the show’s success to begin writing material for the second s e r ie s a lthough i t has not y e t been
commissioned. There is also an increased demand for the
models of the Treacle People produced in Sabden. A major toy manufacturer will be beginning pro duction of a revised line of characters shortly so these originals are becoming collectors items. Visitors to the Sabden treacle mines are also
increasing because of the interest generated by the television series, and this is something about which Mr Dewhurst is particularly pleased. He said: “This is good news for the Ribble Val
ley. I think it is much better to diffuse tourism across the area. I am a great believer in the value of village shops and a good summer trade is essen tial for them to survive." Mr Dewhurst has been asked to join Lancashire

the Government’s “positive” con clusions, stating: “I t is clear that these fuels can be burned very successfully, subject to proper controls and careful monitoring.
We tru s t people will be reassured by the Government’s view th a t alternative fuels have been found to pose no threat to health.” The company is to continue its own monitoring. The area’s MP, however, is far
response and, while he welcomed th e Government’s reassurance that no adverse health effects had been observed in the vicinity of the kilns, the many le t te rs the committee had received from local residents indicated that little had been done to allay public concern. “I am therefore disappointed that our recommendation on improved public consultation received a somewhat peremptory response,” he said.
Mr Bennett expressed dismay

I do no t know how the agency has arrived a t its figures, bu t surely th e b e st way to get data of this sort is by consulting local doctors. I f the agency is not going to carry out a public health test, this is the very least it could do.” Mr Evans said he would be con-,
