A MAN who was bom into a long-established C l i th e ro e te x t i le 1 «mily and could recall the days of clogs and shawls has died a
month before his 93rd birthday. Mr Thomas Garnett was
the son of the owner of the fo rm er Low Moor Mill,
w h i c h a t i t s p u n k employed more than S50
people, but he spent most of ms own career in a vari ety of jobs, ranging from
t e a c h i n g to a n t i q u e dealing. His work took him to
several p a i ls of the coun try and abroad, but he and his wife, Eileen (now SS), returned to the CHthcroe a re a in th e 1970s, and have lived both in West B radford and Clitheroe during recent years. When lie celebrated his 9 0 th b i r th d a y on J u ly

C h th e ro e , he to ld th e Advertiser and Times that he recalled his fa th e r ’s employees working from 0
a.in. to 0 p.m. and walking to and from Low Moor from as far away as West Bradford.

clogs and shawls,” he said. “ I t did not m a t te r what tlie weather was like, that
was th e norm for those days.” His father, William, was
th e la s t own er of Low Moor Mill, which closed in l 9 2 S . T h e m i l l w a s founded in 1799 by J ere miah Garnett, who came from Otley to launch an enterprise which for more th an a c en tu ry was the hub of a h a rd -w o rk in g community on the banks of the Kibble.
