Outstanding Stonyhurst success

MORE th a n 70 of the country’s leading prepara to ry school golfers con verged on the Ribble Valley to compete in the Stony hurst College Golf Tourna ment. They did so unaware of the

fact the 100-year-old Stony hurst Park course was once played by George Walker, President Bush's maternal grandfather, when he was a pupil at the college. Subsequently, of course, he

went on to inaugurate the Walker Cup which is still

competed for by the ama teurs of Great Britain and

attracted competitors from far and wide and proved to be an outstanding success. Scottish youngster William

George Embley

THE Clayton brothers, Peter and Ralph, returned 46 points to win the fourball Stableford held a t Clitheroe Golf Club on Saturday. John Hammond and Ken Barker claimed runners-up

spot with 45 points and the Ian Buttle-John Haggerty pairing totalled 43 points and finished third on the card from John Cartmell and Ray Ashley, David Hillary and John Peel, David McKenzie and Conor McLaughlin. Rising s tar Martin Cane was in excellent form as he won the 36-hole nett event for the Tom Morris Putter on Sun

day. He followed a morning round of 80-7-73 with an after

noon round of 74-7-67, and his 140 aggregate earned him a card play-off success over Tom Poole, who shot 73-7-66

and 81-7-74. Contrasting rounds of 72-6-66 and 82-6-76 clinched third

Quarry travelled from Perth and it proved to be a most worthwhile journey indeed as he returned a four-over-par 76 gross to be crowned cham pion and lif t the coveted Stonyhurst Trophy. Clive Burrows (St Mary’s

Hall) finished runner-up in the Under 12 category but all the other award-winners were from outside the area. Stonyhurst College head master Dr Giles Mercer

thanked the sponsors, Bowring Insurance Brokers, for their support and con gratulated the successful competitors on their efforts. Ray Carter, a former teacher

a t St Mary's Hall, was the official s tar te r and all the players were transported to the college for an excellent buffet prepared by Carl and Jean e tte Sims and their catering staff.

THE annual meeling of Readstone United Junior Football Club takes place on Thursday at the Simon- stone Hotel, starting at 8- 30 p.m. All parents are invited to

attend. The end-of-season pre

sentation evening will once ag ain be held at Padiham Town Hall on Fri day, June 28th, commenc ing at 7-30 p.m. All players will receive a

trophy and parents are again invited.

place for Scott Milne on 142, Ken O’Brien was one shot adrift with 85-13-72 and 84-1371, Bill Hamer was fifth with 84-8-76 and 76-8-68 and Paul Connolly was sixth with 79-5-74 and 75-5-70, Mark Jones and Daniel Preedy also returning 144 n e t t bu t narrowly missing out on a prize. • Clitheroe GC s tar Stuart Andrew won both his match es as Lancashire, champions of the Northern Counties' League, surrendered their three-year unbeaten record in a 10-8 defeat by Northumberland a t Slaley Hall on Sat urday. Andrew and P. Bird won their morning foursomes by 1

hole and Andrew followed up this success with a 1 hole success against I. Ferrie in the afternoon singles. Andrew, the Northern Order of Merit leader, did not fig

ure prominently in the Pleasington Antlers on Sunday. But spare a thought for his Clitheroe and county col

league Paul Dwyer. Having shot 72 in the morning, the reigning Harold Ryden Trophy holder stepped on to the 18th tee in the afternoon needing “only a five” for victory. However, he found out of bounds on the final hole, took

eight and signed for a last-round 73 which saw him lose by three shots from Castle Hawk’s Garry Boardman. a Mytton Fold recorded another impressive victory in the

Mail on Sunday Team Classic when they overwhelmed Bolton Old Links 4-0 on Friday. Mike Bardi, Len Ingram, Ted Bamborough and John

Duckett all recorded comfortable wins as Mytton Fold made local knowledge count. A single Stableford was held a t Mytton Fold on Satur

day, Mick Townsend overcoming difficult conditions to emerge a most worthy winner. Townsend compiled 36 points to win by one from Scott

Thompson and Martin Sherliker. Glen Tebbutt won 55 balls for recording the only two of

the day on the ninth hole. • Stonyhurst Park member Ian Barton is the new holder

of the John Pilling Memorial Trophy following an impres sive round of 80-12-68. Stewart Procter claimed the gross prize with a round of 77. Peter Graingger totalled 37 Stableford points to win the

President’s Day competition by two points from runner- up Andy Young, third-placed Andy Dodd and Geoff Pal- lis ter in fourth place. “F a ir sex” prizes were won by Joanne Garstang (34 points) and Josephine Porter (30

points). • Mrs I. Hinks and Mrs E. Trueman were on winning

form in the two-divisional medal round a t Clitheroe. Mrs Hinks returned 82-13-69 to claim first place in the

Silver Division, and Mrs Trueman led them home in the Bronze Division with 94-25-69. Kim Rostron, who retained her Northern Women’s

Championship recently, has qualified along with Mrs C. Stokes, Mrs M. Harrison and Mrs M. Thompson to rep resent the club in the ELLGA team event. • Jean Tasker recorded a one-stroke victory in Whalley ladies’ Longworth Cup second qualifier. She returned 94- 13-71 and won ahead of Carol Blackadder (91-19-72) and Christine Dickinson (97-23-74).

T h e b i g g u n s a r e s p i k e d !

TH E f i r s t round of the C litheroe Pool League Challenge Gup knockout competition produced a few shocks as some big teams fell a t the first hur- rdle. The biggest shock of all

came a t the Dog and Par tridge where the Premier Division leaders Dog B were playing host to to Third Division minnows in the form of Horse Shoe B. Dog B stormed into a formi

dable 3-0 and required one more frame to clinch it but, amazingly, they lost the last four frames! Shock number two came a t

Legion B a t home to First Division leaders Castle A. Second Division strugglcrs

Legion hammered the Castle 4-1, with wins from A. Wil son, M. Graham, N. McTear and Carole Ingham. There was yet another shock

result in the match between Second Division Black Horse A and Premier Division Stork Hotel A when the lower division side sealed a controversial 4-3 win. Cup holders Whalley Arms
