life we have always been a dog family. We have no objection to cats; I don’t dislike cats (the dog does) and can tolerate and take considerable interest in all kinds of other small crea tures but, somehow to us, none of them seem to gen erate the same warmth and affection which ema nates so naturally from members of the canine

breed. Our dogs have always

been dear ly-valued, highly-respected members of the household; splendid and loyal playmates for

the children when young and when, in due course, the children departed to establish homes of their own — and, of course, to acquire dogs of their own — our own pets: became even more firmly en trenched in our affections.

took the place of, and were a warm-hearted sub stitute for , the departed youngsters.

To some degree they

similar conditions apply in cat families but, for us, it is dogs every, time.

I have no doubt that Pets, too, have another

very useful quality. For example, when travelling far from home and meet ing strangers for the first time, the smartness, the cleverness, the almost human qualities of the re-

spective animals always makes an excellent open ing for pleasant conversa tion and social chatter. Thus it was. that, .when
