■ Skipton’s premier historic monument must surely be the ancient castle, established hun dreds of years ago on the brink of a perpen dicular rock which provided an ideal site. For centuries, it stood as a symbol of strength and solidarity, even withstanding a three-year siege by the Roundheads in-the Civil War. The days of conflict are now long gone, and today the castle slumbers gently, dreaming perhaps of grander times ana fulfilling a very different role — that of one of the area’s best-known tourist attractions.
