THE JOURNAL
RAW INTERIORS
Having honed her eye as a senior designer at Rose Uniacke, Rachel Aisling Walker founded her studio in 2021. She is quickly becoming known for her serene and timeless interiors, informed by a former career in exhibition design.
What inspires you? I grew up in Italy in the lakeside town of Angera in Lombardy, and every time I go home it sparks my creativity.
Describe your style in three words. Elegant, timeless and warm.
What projects are you working on at the moment? A townhouse in Marylebone, an artist’s mews in central London, and a few exciting projects in the Hebrides in Scotland, which I can’t wait to share more about. We’re also working on the refurbishment of our new studio and showroom, as well as our own mountain house on Lake Como.
What’s the thread that runs through every scheme, regardless of aesthetic? My interiors are quite pared back, so it’s essential the detailing is spot on as there’s nowhere to hide.
What’s your latest discovery at the Design Centre? My youngest daughter is just about to move into her own room and I have been looking for a fabric for her curtains. I adore ‘Little Block’ by Mahala at Tissus D’Hélène.
STUDIO YARNER
Having worked for the likes of Martin Brudnizki and Nicola Harding, Laura Graham and Hianta Cassam Chenai co-founded their interior architecture and design studio in 2024. Based in Devon, they create inviting homes that are rich in detail, and are about to start work on their first hospitality project.
What inspires you? Our surroundings in south Devon. Devon and Cornwall are home to an incredible community of makers, craftspeople and artists, and their work is a constant source of inspiration for us.
What’s the thread that runs through every scheme, regardless of aesthetic? Our design DNA is rooted in authenticity. We honour original features, prioritise natural materials and focus on creating spaces that are not only beautiful and joyful, but also deeply personal.
Is there any business advice you wish you’d known when you started out? Back yourself and your vision. When starting out, it’s tempting to say yes to everything, but staying true to your instincts and values will ultimately lead to more meaningful collaborations.
What projects are you working on at the moment? We are currently working on an inspiring wellness centre in the heart of Totnes, a Grade II-listed farmhouse in Salcombe, and a large residential project in a magical Dartmoor setting for a family.
What’s your latest discovery at the Design Centre? We visited WOW!house over the summer – our favourite element of detailing was in Ben Pentreath Studio’s incredible kitchen, with joinery crafted by Lopen.
