Outside of work, Karen is passionate about a variety of activities that keep her both inspired and balanced. She deeply values quality time with family and friends, which grounds her and renews her energy. She is an avid reader and lifelong learner, constantly exploring new ideas through books, art and travel – each experience broadening her perspective and fuelling her creativity. Nature also plays a big role in her life. She finds solace in the outdoors, whether it’s a quiet walk or a challenging hike. Additionally, she loves staying active with sports like golf, tennis, walking and skiing. These activities not only help her to maintain physical well-being but also provide a refreshing break, enabling her to return to my work with renewed focus and enthusiasm.

At American Crane, we are addressing these challenges by fostering a strong company culture, investing in employee training and developing long-term supplier relationships. Looking ahead, we will continue to evolve, embracing new technologies, expanding into new markets, and remaining committed to the principles that have made us successful for over 50 years.
OCH: What is it like to be a woman in a leadership role in this company? KN: Being a woman in a leadership role at American Crane has been both an honour and a journey of breaking new ground. I believe that leadership goes beyond making strategic decisions – it's about forging a culture of authenticity, trust and resilience. A significant part of my journey was shaped by the guidance of my dad, who served as an incredible role model. His mentorship helped me develop the skills and confidence necessary to lead, and because of him, I never viewed being a woman as a hurdle in my career. Instead, I embraced my unique perspective to challenge the status quo in an industry traditionally dominated by men. I also feel a deep responsibility to pay it forward and be a role model to others in our industry, regardless of gender. I believe in creating ripples
– sharing our stories and showing others what is possible can open doors and inspire change far beyond our immediate circles. I'm proud to lead with the values that have shaped me and remain dedicated to inspiring the next generation of workers in our industry.
OCH: What kind of personality do you think is required to succeed in this business? KN: In my experience, there isn’t one recipe for leadership – there are many paths to success. I recall a podcast discussion where the conversation focused on the essential qualities of a great leader, and the insights truly resonated with me. One key quality is unshakable self-belief, balanced by a healthy dose of self-doubt. This balance helps maintain confidence while ensuring you remain open to learning and improvement. Equally important is the blend of a healthy ego with humility – having the self-assurance to lead, yet not taking yourself too seriously. Impulse control is another critical trait. Thoughtful, measured decision- making is vital in navigating the challenges of our industry. Alongside this, emotional stamina – often referred to as GRIT – is essential for weathering the ups and downs that inevitably come with leadership. And finally, innate curiosity drives continuous learning and innovation, ensuring that you're always ready to embrace new ideas and opportunities. Together, these attributes form the cornerstone of a resilient and adaptive leadership style.
