One of the largest, wildest and the most northern state in the US, Alaska is well known for its massive wilderness and extreme landscape. Here are ten facts about Alaska that you might not know.

The state is nicknamed ‘The Last Frontier’ to describe the wild nature of the territory.


In the summer, there can be up to 20 hours of sunlight. In parts of the state north of the Arctic Circle, the sun can stay above the horizon for 24 hours a day, earning the nickname ‘Land of the Midnight Sun’.

The state flower is the ‘Forget- me-not’.


Roughly 1-in-58 residents is a registered pilot because planes are an essential for travel across the state’s terrain.


It is the biggest state in the US, larger than Texas, California and Montana combined.


Dog sledding is the official sport of the state since 1972.

The only WWII battle on US soil took place in Alaska, when Japan invaded the Aleutian Islands in 1942.


Juneau, the state capital, is the only US capital inaccessible by road.
