Manufacturing sales have fallen and the total growth of new manufacturing orders has been paltry.
Latest news and developments Manufacturing value-add continued to decline in March 2026. According to Statistics Canada, the manufacturing industry’s value-add at constant prices (seasonally adjusted at annual rates) fell by 2.7% YoY in March 2026, following YoY declines of 3.8% in February and 5.2% in January 2026. Meanwhile, the average construction industry’s value-add fell by 3.9% YoY in Q1 2026. Annually, manufacturing value-add declined by 2.2% in 2025.
Investment in industrial buildings continued
to decline in March 2026. According to Statistics Canada, the total value of investment in industrial building construction (in seasonally adjusted constant prices) fell by 11.6% YoY in March 2026, preceded by YoY declines of 15.5% in February and 16.2% in January 2026. Industrial permits issued grew in March 2026.
According to Statistics Canada, the total value of industrial building permits issued in the country (in seasonally adjusted constant prices) grew sharply by 114.2% YoY in March 2026, rebounding after YoY declines of 31.5% in February and 64.5% in January 2026. Across the quarter, the total value of building permits issued for industrial buildings fell by 68.5% YoY in Q1 2026. This was preceded by an overall annual decline of 23.8% in 2025. Manufacturing sales fell but new orders
grew in March 2026. According to Statistics Canada, the total sales value of manufactured goods fell by 1.4% YoY in March 2026, while the total value of new manufacturing orders grew marginally by 0.3% YoY during the same period. In cumulative terms, the sales value of manufactured goods fell by 4.7% YoY in Q1 2026, decreasing
from CAD162.9bn ($118.8bn) in Q1 2025 to CAD155.3bn ($113.2bn). Similarly, the total value of new manufacturing orders fell by 4.1%, decreasing from CAD164.3bn ($119.8bn) in Q1 2025 to CAD157.6bn ($114.9bn) in Q1 2026. This was preceded by annual declines of 2.9% for manufacturing sales and 1.5% for manufacturing new orders in 2025. Total value of exports grew in March 2026.
According to Statistics Canada, the total value of merchandise exports grew by 8.8% YoY in March 2026 (in current prices), preceded by YoY declines of 2.5% in February and 15% in January 2026. Altogether, the total value of merchandise exports fell by 3.3% YoY across the first three months of 2026, decreasing from CAD209.5bn ($152.8bn) in January–March 2025 to CAD202.6bn ($147.7bn) in January–March 2026. This was preceded by an annual marginal decrease of 0.2% in 2025.
