Enhancing cold storage capacity at Heathrow
A client based in Heathrow Airport, one of the busiest hubs for international travel, faced a critical need for additional food cold storage space due to a newly secured contract. To address this challenge, TITAN Containers, a leading provider of storage solutions, recommended its cutting- edge Arctic SuperStore range, offering unlimited cold storage capacity with precision temperature control of up to -40°C.
ITAN Container’s approach is client- centric, tailoring each build to meet unique requirements. Customisation encompasses aspects such as size, temperature zones, door types and other specific additions to ensure an ideal fit. In this case, the client at Heathrow Airport required a substantial solution: 16 x 40ft containers, collectively providing a floor area of over 475m2

This client’s design was segmented into five sections to accommodate varying temperature needs. Three larger freezer zones at -20°C were designated for storing excess food produce, while two airlock zones at 3°C facilitated the seamless transfer of stock into a dispatch zone for onward delivery to the main building. TITAN recommended installing eight doors to have several accesses to all zones
and to provide health and safety peace of mind.
A strategic recommendation made
by TITAN was to utilise ten refrigeration machines to power the 16 bays, offering energy savings of approximately 50% compared to installing a machine for each bay. This setup also provided redundancy in case of an unexpected unit malfunction. Additionally, the implementation of SmartArctic technology allowed for remote monitoring and efficient management of refrigeration units, enhancing operational oversight and ensuring a seamless auditing process. The system was further configured to deliver real-time alarm notifications to key stakeholders, assuring peace of mind and proactive issue resolution.
Safe and secure
The Arctic SuperStore not only excels in storage but also prioritises safety features for its users. These include an internal door release for emergency exits, easily
accessible doors to prevent back injuries, internal alarms with external alerts, anti- slip flooring and ample lighting for safety. Additionally, loading and unloading are made safer with fixed ramps and sides, and clear day-glow safety signage along with user manuals in the local language to ensure easy understanding of safety procedures. These features collectively enhance the Arctic SuperStore’s usability and safety, making it a reliable choice, especially in high-demand environments like Heathrow Airport.
The installation process was executed efficiently over a span of ten days, considering the live operational environment. TITAN’s Arctic team exhibited their expertise by meticulously orchestrating the delivery of the 16 containers and ensuring the yard grounds were appropriately levelled for a seamless installation.
