Next level for juices: 100% fruit, 30% less calories

The beverage industry grapples with the demand for low-calorie, sugar-reduced products, influenced by labelling systems like Nutri-Score and the EU Commission’s draft for a future declaration on sugar- reduced fruit juices. AUSTRIA JUICE has developed a process that results in 100% fruit juice with only 70% of the calories, aligning with growing consumer preferences for natural, sugar-reduced options.

ncreasing demand for low-calorie and sugar-reduced products is one of the biggest challenges currently facing the beverage and juice industry. This is accompanied by labels such as the Nutri-Score or traffic light labelling that are also affecting the food industry. Consequently, the fruit juice industry needs innovative approaches to respond to changing consumer behaviour and to see sugar reduction as a great opportunity for new developments in the beverage category. For fruit juice producers, however, a significant sugar reduction represents a major challenge in beverage development. New technologies are now paving the way for 100% juices with lower sugar content as well as corresponding regulatory requirements and declarations for sugar-reduced fruit juices are also currently being developed at EU level.

The portfolio currently includes apple, orange and multivitamin varieties and contain no additives, are not sweetened and have a comparable content of minerals, trace elements and polyphenols as the 100% juice. The 30% calorie reduction compared to a 100% apple juice also improves the Nutri Score rating. According to the currently existing regulation and categorisation, AUSTRIA JUICE is marked as grade B, whereas a standard apple juice is marked as grade C.

AUSTRIA JUICE offers a range of sugar-reduced juices, currently including apple, orange and multivitamin varieties.

Draft of the EU Commission on the declaration of sugar-reduced juices The EU Commission published a draft for a revision of the fruit juice directive in April 2023. As a key player in the beverage and food industry, AUSTRIA JUICE welcomes this forward-looking draft of a possible future declaration as it creates a clear framework for a new innovative product category in the field of 100% juices. This is done without neglecting the core of the directive and preserving the naturalness of fruit juice as much as possible. The technologies mentioned are well researched and established to protect the fruit juice from possible adulteration. The required

minimum reduction is 30% of the sugar content. The draft provides that the products that meet the sugar reduction criteria can be labelled “sugar-reduced fruit juice from concentrate”. This also gives the consumer a clear guideline for assessing such products.

A successful approach In recent years, AUSTRIA JUICE has dedicated itself intensively to researching sugar-reduced juices to meet consumers’ needs for natural, sugar-reduced product concepts. As a result, AUSTRIA JUICE has developed a biological-physical process that achieves a sugar-reduced juice with 100% fruit but only 70% calories. The authenticity and specific characteristics of the fruit juice are kept.

Consumer trends as innovation drivers for fruit juice producers For European consumers, no added sugar is the most important criteria in juice drinks after taste, combined with a strong interest in less sweet flavour profiles. To address consumer concerns about sugar, brands have started to highlight sugar-free and reduced sugar recipes. In the long term, this is also an opportunity for fruit and vegetable juices.

By combining different fruits and vegetables such as carrot or beetroot, the calorie content is usually lower but there remains the challenge to achieve a well-balanced flavour profile. AUSTRIA JUICE, therefore, always strives for the best product solution for the customer’s versatile projects. Whether that’s beverages with full sugar content, low-calorie options or vegetable-mixed juices, AUSTRIA JUICE realises customised beverage as well as flavour concepts that are individually tailored to the customer’s requirements. ●
