he successful deployment of five all-electric commuter ferries in the inner Oslofjord, a project spearheaded by Boreal, SEAM and Multi Maritime, not only demonstrates the viability of zero-emission technology but also sets a precedent for its wider application across various passenger vessel segments. Norway’s commitment to achieving a fully electrified public transport system by 2028 has provided a strong impetus for this transformation. The Oslofjord project has become a “showcase for zero- emission ambitions within shipping and ferry traffic”, as articulated by Ragnar Langåker, project director at SEAM. “The technology is ready,” he states, advocating for wider adoption.

Retrofitting for sustainability While the Oslofjord ferries were newly constructed, all-electric vessels, SEAM also offers solutions for electrifying existing diesel vessels, either through hybrid or all-electric propulsion systems. This approach allows for a more flexible and cost-effective transition to zero- emission operations. The conversion of the Aker Brygge-Nesoddtangen route from natural gas to all-electric operation, with SEAM’s involvement as a partner, exemplifies this capability. The Oslofjord ferries, along with the Nesoddbåtene, serve as tangible examples of how low and zero-emission technology can contribute to a cleaner urban environment. ●
