Company insight Transform decarbonisation

Elomatic’s Elogrid solution helps to enhance vessel performance, reduce fuel consumption and minimise underwater noise, helping its customers tackle pressing industry challenges. We speak with Jukka Suvanto and Juha Tanttari from Elomatic to understand how Elogrid’s flexibility and innovative technology is paving the way for a more sustainable and efficient future in cruise operations.

ddressing the changing demands for efficiency, sustainability and regulatory compliance in the cruise industry is becoming increasingly urgent. Elomatic’s game-changing Elogrid solution integrates advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) with a highly engineered design to improve vessel performance, reduce fuel consumption and minimise underwater radiated noise (URN), redefining the future of cruise operations in a challenging landscape. “Elogrid offers a flexible solution, allowing us to focus on specific aspects such as energy consumption or underwater radiated noise, depending on what our customer requires,” says Jukka Suvanto, senior sales manager at Elomatic. “We can modify the product accordingly to achieve these targets more efficiently.”

Elogrid is designed to reduce energy waste and improve vessel efficiency.

Tailored for optimal performance The precision engineering leads to several key benefits, including lower noise levels (~2dB(A)), enhancing on-board comfort by reducing airborne noise; reduced vibration (~25%) ensuring a smoother, quieter and more stable sailing experience; and improved side thrust (~10%) enhancing manoeuvrability and operational efficiency. By addressing these core performance factors, Elogrid provides immediate operational benefits while significantly extending the lifespan of critical vessel components.

“The top benefits of Elogrid include improved fuel efficiency, enhanced thrust and manoeuvrability of the vessel, and a reduction in noise and vibration,” says Suvanto. “It is also maintenance-free and the grid design is unique for each vessel or vessel series. We do not have a standard grid; instead, each one is individually designed to maximise the benefits of the grid system.” With sustainability, regulatory compliance and cost-efficiency becoming increasingly critical factors in the industry, fuel consumption remains a key concern. Elogrid is specifically designed to reduce

energy waste and improve vessel efficiency. The device, mounted within the thruster tunnel openings, minimises additional resistance from tunnels during sailing and optimises side thrust when thrusters are engaged. Additionally, by reducing the load on the main propellers, Elogrid lowers the noise they produce, further enhancing on-board comfort and minimising environmental impact.

A more sustainable future of cruise operations Vessels equipped with Elogrid experience fuel savings ranging from 1% to 4%, depending on design and operational parameters. These savings directly translate to lower carbon dioxide emissions, therefore improving the vessel’s Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) rating, a critical factor in today’s stringent environmental regulations.

By leveraging advanced CFD analysis, Elomatic ensures that Elogrid delivers unparalleled accuracy and efficiency. This comprehensive analysis assesses the total resistance impacts at varying speeds, bollard pull conditions with different thrust loads and flow characteristics and hydrodynamic interactions. With an in-house CFD team, Elomatic guarantees that each Elogrid installation is backed by rigorous testing and validation, ensuring seamless integration with any vessel.

Addressing noise pollution amid stringent regulations A growing concern in the industry is the impact of URN on marine life, which is leading to further regulation – another challenge the Elogrid solution seeks to address.

“Measuring underwater noise is challenging in harbours due to the numerous sources of noise around, as water is an effective medium for transmitting sound. Noise can originate from far away, complicating the assessment,” says Juha Tanttari, lead consulting engineer at Elomatic. “To address this issue, we have developed a CFD tool to analyse noise emissions from different components of ships, including propellers, which play a significant role in noise generation. Proactively adopting quieter practices and complying with emerging regulations will help to avoid potential penalties.”

By reducing the load on the main propellers, Elogrid directly contributes to lowering noise output, helping vessels meet stricter regulations while improving on-board conditions. Through optimised hull shapes, enhanced propeller designs and hydrodynamics, Elogrid incorporates CFD-driven improvements to reduce noise and vibration levels, contributing to a quieter and more sustainable environment. “At Elomatic, we are committed to continuous development,” says Tanttari. “Our focus is on streamlining our products while taking into account structural and fluid dynamics. This involves ongoing optimisation and further advancements in these areas.”

In an industry where efficiency, sustainability and compliance are paramount, Elomatic’s Elogrid solution offers a forward-thinking approach to vessel optimisation. ●
