Company insight
Leading the way in cruise ship maintenance and modernisation
With state-of-the-art facilities, a strategic location and a commitment to innovation, Navantia Ship Repairs has become a global leader in cruise ship maintenance, refits and sustainability projects.
Navantia Ship Repairs specialises in the maintenance, repair and modernisation of mega cruise ships. N
avantia Ship Repairs primarily operates in the cruise ship market at the Navantia Cadiz Shipyard, supported by the nearby Navantia Puerto Real Shipyard, both located in the Bay of Cadiz, southern Spain.
The company has been actively engaged in the specialised business of cruise ship repair since 2011, experiencing significant growth over the years. This includes a steady increase in the number of ships serviced and Navantia’s expanding role in repair and modernisation projects. In recent years, Navantia has held the record for repairing the highest number of cruise ships worldwide, completing 14 projects in 2022, 13 in 2023 and 18 in 2024. Most of these projects were undertaken for
12
some of the most prominent international cruise lines, many of which have remained loyal clients over the years. The outlook for 2025 is also highly promising, with 12 projects already confirmed. This aligns with the activity levels of 2024, particularly due to major repair projects planned for the year, including extensive revitalisation efforts.
A milestone project
A significant milestone for Navantia is the scheduled arrival of Allure of the Seas, a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, at the Cadiz shipyard in the first quarter of 2025 for a major docking and revitalisation project. Notably, this vessel previously visited Navantia’s Cadiz facilities in 2015, when it was the largest
cruise ship in the world. As mentioned earlier, cruise ship docking projects are becoming increasingly complex, requiring greater diversification. There is now a higher demand for work on the hotel side of vessels, broadening the scope of services in which Navantia Ship Repairs is involved.
Beyond traditional shipyard activities, such as the application of modern silicone treatment systems to enhance fuel efficiency, Navantia is expanding its services to include the extension of existing accommodation areas. Additionally, large cruise vessels are increasingly seeking solutions to reduce their carbon footprint, and Navantia is actively contributing to these sustainability efforts.
