A

s the year draws to a close, the industry has definitely been through some ups and downs. While nobody expected to reach pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2022, the industry has shown promise as it exceeded previous predictions after demand came back in full force. There have been several factors that have impacted the industry negatively – the Russia–Ukraine war, high gas prices and a recession on the horizon, to name a few – but there continues to be positive forecasts for growth in the upcoming year.

Among these challenges still facing the industry, many hotels are facing staffing shortages in the aftermath of the pandemic. While the development of technology has done a lot to help curb the crisis, the human element is still essential to hospitality. On page 33, we find out how hospitality is tackling this issue and attracting talent. Sustainability continues to be a strong trend that is going nowhere soon either, as holidaymakers expect hotels to adopt environmental practices into their operations more and more. However, some hotels are taking it a step further than plastic-free initiatives; we hear from BIG and Bawah Reserve to find out how they are designing hotels with sustainability at the centre on page 52. Of course, as the days get shorter and colder, many hotels are having to adapt to a post-pandemic world in unexpected ways. Many are still wary of indoor spaces, especially in the colder months, so the sector is having to adapt outdoor and indoor spaces to give its guests confidence. On page 39, we hear from the Hilton to find out how it has adapted its food and beverage offering long-term for a post-Covid world. I hope you enjoy the latest edition of Hotel Management International, and wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
