Mayr-Melnhof invests in new press
Stora Enso revises 2024 profit forecast upwards
Nordic forest products giant Stora Enso has issued a more positive business and profits update.
The company is now
estimating that EBIT guidance to be significantly higher (+50% and above) than the full year 2023 of €342m. The previous guidance for the full
year 2024 was the adjusted EBIT to be higher (more than +15%, but less than +50%) than full year 2023.
In the outlook comment in its Q1, 2024 report, published in April, Stora Enso stated that it anticipates a gradual recovery in market conditions in 2024.
Above: Mayr-Melnhof has invested in new press technology
Mayr-Melnhof Holz has invested in a fully automated modern high-frequency press for the production of glulam standard components at its Olsberg site.
The high-frequency plant presses glulam elements with maximum dimensions of 29cm x 130cm x 24.20m and replaces two hydraulic presses that needed repair. The space-saving implementation made it possible to additionally integrate a constructive press bed for glulam up to 25m in
length into the production process.
As a system provider, ABF was commissioned to integrate the new press in terms of control technology. The focus was on the communication of the high-frequency press with the ERP system, the glue application and the conveyor lines as well as the control of the fully automatic labelling of the pressed glulam bars and the automatic collection of production data to increase productivity.
EOS hopes softwood market will “bottom out” this year
European softwood production declined by 6.4% in 2023 to 80,894,000m3 86,518,000m3
(2022: ) with a further
slight drop expected in 2024, according to the European Organisation of the Sawmilling Industry (EOS).
The figures were presented at the EOS summer General Assembly in Helsinki on June 12-13.
The forecast for 2024 is 79,459.000m3
, which if
accurate will be the lowest production output for EOS countries for about nine years.
But the EOS says there is hope in the industry that the market will bottom out this year.
Production shrunk by 5-10% across EOS member countries in 2023, with the decline in turnover much more sizable. Overseas the situation was equally difficult, with subdued exports across the board – with the exception of the US. Increasing sawnwood deliveries to the US have helped some European sawmills navigate this challenging environment, said the EOS.
