Branching out with Combilift log loader
innovation. The Combi-CLL (Container Log-Loader) was recently exhibited at EXPO Richmond 2024, one of America’s leading trade shows for the forest products industry.

Following the launch of five new models in its 25th anniversary year in 2023, Irish materials handling specialist Combilift has already announced the premiere of another
The concept and operation of the Combi- CLL is based on that of the Combi-CSS (Container Slip Sheet), which has been successfully deployed across numerous industries for the mechanised loading of long products such as packs of timber or steel into containers. This not only reduces the risk of accidents to the workforce and product damage but is incredibly fast compared to other methods – a 40ft container can be fully loaded by one operator in under six minutes.
The 30t capacity electro-hydraulically powered Combi-CLL offers the same benefits when it comes to speed, safety and product integrity. It was designed to address the requirements of exporters of softwood and hardwood logs, the nature and shape of which make them much trickier to handle than palletised or packed products. Logs can be individually lifted and pre-loaded into a robust, high-sided metal “tub” before the patented push- pull mechanism powers the tub into the container. Once inside, the hydraulic dropdown hatch is closed and locked into position to hold the logs securely in place, and the tub is retracted to allow the logs to settle within the container.
Over 97% of UK waste wood processed Woodsafe launches new fire-retardant product
million tonnes (equivalent to 97.9% of total arisings).
Above: The waste wood market is well positioned for 2024
Over 97% of UK waste wood was sent for processing in 2023, the highest level to date, according to the latest annual statistics published on June 13 by the Wood Recyclers’ Association (WRA). The data indicates that while total UK waste wood arisings remained constant last year at approximately 4.5 million tonnes, the amount processed edged upwards from 4.312 million tonnes in 2022 to 4.408
Large-scale biomass continued to be the largest user of waste wood in 2023, accounting for 63% of wood processed (2.8 million tonnes). This is up 2.6% from 2022. Panel board remained the second largest user of waste wood, accounting for 22% (963,000 tonnes) of wood processed. This represents a slight (5%) decrease compared to 2022, due to a depressed housing market, which saw overall production reduce, alongside the closure of the West Fraser South Molton manufacturing plant. Animal bedding, equine surfacing, other recycling and reuse increased during the year to 350,000 tonnes, representing 8% of wood processed. This was up 9% year-on-year as the animal bedding sector recovered from the impact of avian flu in 2022. Pallet refurbishment and reuse of wooden items through local authority reuse hubs also increased and is something the WRA is hoping to be able to report on in the future.

sizes. This flexibility is further enhanced by its ability to execute full incisions ranging from 6mm to 12mm. The VSE250’s automated machine set-up allows operators to switch between product sizes in under 60 seconds. Additionally, the digitally variable speed ranging from 40- 80m/min provides operators with precise control over the processing speed.
Woodsafe Timber Protection has launched a new fire-retardant product, which it says is safe for people and the environment. WOODSAFE PRO Green (WPG) is the result of extensive development of health and environmentally friendly fire-protected wood without the content of labelled hazardous chemical content. The product is now being launched in Europe. For years, PRO has been used in thousands of wood projects to protect people and buildings from fire. Woodsafe has now gone further and strengthened its market leading position by meeting the market demand for more environmentally friendly solutions without the use of functional borates. This is done by replacing the PRO product with WPG. The new formulation of the fire-retardant WPG does not contain any chemicals listed on the REACH SVHC list. WOODSAFE WPG is a premium product that fulfils the requirements of the EU Construction Products Regulation CPR 305/2011. Some of its characteristics include: 100% free of substances requiring labelling, approved emission values, pH neutral, non-hygroscopic properties. WOODSAFE WPG will be launched in conjunction with the Trä & Teknik fair in Gothenburg on September 3-6 this year.
