Raw materials Pakistan
After having dropped the previous month, Pakistan’s buffalo prices were stable in November Sales were at
$0.55 for crust, 1.3–1.5mm. Poland
Polish cow prices fell in November. Selections weighing 26/27kg sold €0.20 lower at €0.60. Bull prices were also
lower, with 40kg selections selling for €1.20. South Africa
African markets ended November having held onto stable prices. Top- quality South African lamb was steady
at $330.00–340.00 per dozen. Lamb HS1 was unchanged at $250.00 per dozen and lamb HS2 was also flat at $190.00 to $200.00. Prices for Lamb TRA were still at $140.00 and those for Lamb TRB at $100.00.
Spain
Sheep prices will not be on the decline any time soon, but the difference between the high end and the low
end is big. Still, prices for lamb and sheepskin were steady to firmer through November. Spanish entrefino for nappa was firmer at €15.00– 16.50. Entrefino doubleface was stable at €12.00–12.50. Double face merino prices were higher at €12.00–14.00. The lachaune selection was steady at €5.00–5.50. Prices are ranged to reflect the different regions in Spain, from lower end to top end quality. They are quoted on an FOB origin basis, per piece (5.5–7ft range, 6.5ft average). Spanish cow prices slipped in November, selling for €0.70 per kilo. Prices for bulls 40kg and up average green weight were weaker, selling at €0.95.
Sweden Swedish cow prices dropped by a significant €0.30
to sell for €1.20 per kilo. Bull prices, which were also considered too high given the rest of the market,
dropped by €0.20 with 34kg and up average green weight selections selling for €1.60.
Turkey
Turkish raw materials were relatively stable in November. Bulls were selling at US$0.90–1.05/kg while cows were
lower at $0.65–0.75/kg. The market was slow as there was less demand from tanners. There are almost no buyers for low-grade sheep or nappa. Because Turkey’s inflation rate is so high, the government increased interest rates, so it’s difficult for companies to find loans. Exports of finished hide and leather are falling compared with last year – the decline is 24%.
UK
English prices were €0.05 lower than our last report. The 36kg and up ox was at £0.85/kg.
October slaughter data showed that UK prime cattle (steers, heifers and young bulls) slaughter was down 2.1% from October 2022. UK clean sheep slaughter was down 2.5% from October last year.
US
US steer selections were suffering from a lack of demand, especially for side- branded hides. Heavy Texas steers were
weakly steady, selling for $24.00–25.00 for seasonal weights. The US cow market was still enjoying good interest in November and prices were mainly steady. US hides and skins exports were lower in 2023 through September, reports the Leather and Hide Council of America. Cured cattle hide exports decreased by 8% in volume and 13% in value compared with 2022. Wet-blue shipments dropped by 7% in volume and 15% in value compared with 2022. ●
