Raw materials

Extracts from the Hidenet World Reports

Argentina

Argentina’s market was quiet for much of November due to the presidential run-off election on the 19th. It was a welcome break for raw material prices, which had been on the rise for several weeks in October. Since our last report, steers gained another $0.13 to sell for $0.70 per kilo, cows added $0.80 to sell for $0.54 and heifers rose by $0.14, selling for $0.72. Argentina completed the construction of the Curtidor Industrial Park (PIC) of Lanús, in the province of Buenos Aires. The Industrial Liquid Effluent Treatment Plant (PTELI) is about 70% finished and electromechanical connections continue. The park will be an improved, environmentally conscious industrial infrastructure for small and medium-sized tanning companies.

Australia

After declining in the early autumn, wet-blue ox prices stabilised. Grade A selections at 23–27kg were steady

at US$48.00 per piece, as were selections at 18–23kg at $40.00.

Meat & Livestock Australia reported that Q3 cattle slaughter was up by 11% from Q2 and 23% from Q3 last year at 1.91 million head. Slaughter was higher in every state, with the biggest increase in South Australia (48% from Q2), and the smallest increase in Western Australia (4% from Q2). Male slaughter rose substantially less than female slaughter: 8% over Q2 to 974,000 head, while female slaughter rose by 13% to 936,000 head. That makes the female slaughter rate 49% for the quarter, just over 47% for the year-to-date putting the country’s cattle herd in a destocking phase.

Bangladesh

Bangladesh’s footwear exports to the US in January-September dropped substantially – by 45% – largely

because of the economic slowdown and high inflation. Global conflicts and longer lead times were also to blame. Overall export earnings hit a 26-month low in October, plummeting to $3.76bn. October export earnings were down by 13.64% year-on-year, reports New Age.

Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun has called for a countrywide network to collect and preserve raw hides. This would help improve the domestic leather industry, which is considered a key sector for growth and exports.

Benelux

Benelux bull prices succumbed to the market pressure affecting the entire region. Weights of 30–39kg were

lower at €1.00 per kilo. Selections weighing 40–49kg were €0.10–0.15 lower since our last report, selling at €1.05 per kilo. Prices are for delivery to northern Italian tanneries on a 30-day payment plan.
