in itself but it is also symbolic of ESTA's work to harmonise standards across Europe. The inefficiencies in our
current fragmented market is palpable. In 2019, the combined turnover of the mobile crane and abnormal transport industries in Europe was estimated at €24 billion annually. But an estimated €500 million - a huge amount - is spent annually on applying for,
obtaining, and complying with the provisions of exceptional transport permits. And whereas the design and
construction of mobile cranes in the EU is regulated under the EN-13000 norm, the rules covering the use and operation of mobile cranes vary from country to country. Why?
As one user told ESTA recently:
"The politicians talk about the single market. But in sectors such
as ours, it really only exists in theory."
It goes without saying that all
of the issues above are in danger of being over-shadowed by the fall-out from the tragic war in Ukraine, and its wider economic and social impacts. But whatever happens, for the moment the message is simple. In Europe, together we are stronger. It is something we forget at our peril.

ESTA has active members in over 25 countries and has established close ties with the equipment manufacturers who supply the heavy transport and mobile crane industries. Our primary objectives are: • to lobby for the European harmonisation of rules and regulations for crane companies and hauliers • to represent the interests of our industry and members in Europe • to enhance safety standards and promote best practice We also have an important social role. Through our meetings, dinners and awards, we bring companies of all sorts together to share best practice, discuss issues they are facing, make new contacts and, it must be said, enjoy each other's company. We have serious work to do. But we also have fun. Come to our awards evening in the spring of every year and you'll see what we mean.
