COMMENT Ӏ JUNE 2024
OPPORTUNITIES AND VULNERABILITIES
Technology is, once again, a pervasive theme throughout this issue. In the specialised transport feature (page 28), for example, we see how the development of battery technology, specifically lithium batteries, has helped pave the way for the possible future of heavy transport. Mammoet’s pioneering work has resulted in the development of battery-powered SPMTs. These have already carried out their first job inside the ITER nuclear fusion research facility in southern France. Powered by ePPUs, the SPMT's lack of emissions opens new avenues of work in ‘clean’ indoor environments, plus in enclosed areas – such as tunnels. In the repair and servicing feature (page 20) we
hear from Manitowoc field service technicians on how the use of technology is making their jobs faster and more efficient – reducing machine downtime and increasing customer satisfaction. This feature also covers the Wolffkran's Wolff Assist smart
service tool. The system comprises smart glasses equipped with a camera, microphone, and a monitor. Once connected to the internet Wollfkran's technicians can
share information – both visually and via audio. A live translation function is designed to overcome any potential language

In our 'technology
threats' special report (page 34), however, feature writer Julian Champkin looks at how this connected nature of modern lifting equipment is also a point of weakness – a possible entry-point for cyberattackers looking to wreak havoc. This has already happened in the ship-to-shore crane sector, at ports around the world, and mobile crane could be under attack next! It seems, no matter how advanced technology becomes the very human condition of 'intent' (a metric used in courtrooms around the world) underpins all we do.
