VISION TECHNOLOGY Ӏ SAFETY
lead to time and cost savings in construction projects. Tasks are completed more swiftly, it claims, and with fewer setbacks boosting overall productivity. Another advantage that
HookCam notes is increased operator comfort. Reduced reliance on line-of-sight visibility makes the crane operator’s job less physically demanding, alleviating operator fatigue and enhancing performance. The video stream from its cameras can also record and so can be used for documentation, analysis, and training. It provides a visual record of crane operations, which proves beneficial for quality control and safety assessments. In some cases HookCam says
its systems can even be configured for remote monitoring. This allows project managers to observe crane operations from a distance, further bolstering both safety and quality control.
CLEAR VISION BlokCam is another pioneer of crane camera safety systems. Now part of the Crosby portfolio, and under the Kito Crosby umbrella, it has just launched what it describes as its ‘most advanced crane camera systems to date’. The new Crosby BlokCam X4, and M4 systems, have enhancements that Crosby says are designed to further elevate safety, situational awareness, and operational efficiency on construction sites. It claims the Series 4 delivers improved performance, increased
reliability, and refined functionality. For example, the Series 4
camera systems have a higher standard of clarity, with 2K QHD (quad high definition) resolution, and 2MP resolution at 15fps (in a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio). These resolutions, Crosby says,
deliver exceptional clarity for crane operators. They also have an expanded field of view (93° horizontal, 48° vertical, and 117° diagonal). Crosby says these expanded viewing angles provide operators with a better perspective of the load, surroundings, and potential hazards. Other new camera technology
offered by the new series includes: WDR Pro (Wide Dynamic Range) which is designed to provide good visibility in challenging lighting conditions – from bright sunlight to deep shadows; enhanced low light performance – with crisp, clear images even in minimal lighting environments; and improved high- definition recording. BlokCam is battery powered and the battery pack on the latest version now has a tool-free design and grippy finger slots designed to make swapping the battery easier and faster. The system’s transmitter
supports up to 50 days of continuous footage. This, Crosby says, facilitates more robust documentation, operational review, and safety compliance. The BlokCam camera system is suitable for use on a range of crane types, from tower cranes to crawlers and telescopic cranes.

It also incorporates audio from hook to cab and has a long transmission range.
PEDESTRIAN AVOIDANCE As well as the element of risk whilst lifting loads, mobile cranes also pose a potential threat to pedestrians whilst they move around job sites. Cameras can help mobile crane and specialised transport operators avoid from hitting on-foot construction workers or pedestrians. To help increase driver visibility Michigan, USA-headquartered electronic systems and technologies supplier Stoneridge has launched its established MirrorEye camera monitoring system for the off-highway sector. MirrorEye has already been widely adopted in the commercial vehicle market. Stoneridge says MirrorEye
replaces traditional mirrors with compact, robust cameras and high- definition in-cab monitors, giving operators a wider, clearer view and dramatically reducing blind spots. This enhanced visibility allows operators to manoeuvre safely and confidently, it says, reducing errors, minimising downtime, and increasing overall productivity during off-highway operations. Built for all conditions,
MirrorEye features infrared colour night vision for low-light operations, integrated heating elements to defrost lenses in winter, and hydrophobic coatings that help repel rain, snow, and dust. “Off-highway environments
