NORTH AMERICA
On the opposite side of the world the self-erecting tower crane is making inroads, too. At the recent ConExpo tradeshow, Las Vegas, USA, Liebherr launched a slew of machines onto the North American market. Specifically, its latest generation of K self-erecting cranes: the 43 K, 61 K and 91 K. They are paired with its latest assistance systems and Liebherr claims the launch as, ‘a milestone for contractors and rental companies seeking compact equipment with high lifting capacity, rapid deployment and intelligent automation’. The new K generation is
completely renewed, says Liebherr, and tailored to meet the demands of the North American construction market. They combine compact transport dimensions, powerful lifting capacities and exceptional adaptability on tight urban jobsites, claims Liebherr, and are backed by a full suite of intelligent assistance systems, seen for the first time in the USA.
These assistance systems, says
Liebherr, increase precision, job site safety, and operator comfort. Specifically, they comprise:
Sway Control Plus; Guided Hook; Vertical Line Finder; Positioning Pilot. The safety and efficiency these systems provide is a good fit for the needs of the North American construction market, says Liebherr, where strict safety requirements and rising labour costs shape daily operations. So why has Liebherr highlighted
North America as being a market of such interest? The company lists multiple advantages, and areas of application, that it says make its cranes so well-suited. A big advantage in the North American market, it says, is that a single K crane can replace several machines traditionally used for material handling applications. Instead of multiple telehandlers navigating congested sites one tower crane provides full coverage
from a fixed position. This, it says, reduces traffic, minimises the risk of accidents, protects landscaping, and allows subcontractors to coordinate workflows efficiently. For rental companies Liebherr
says the broad application spectrum of its self-erectors results in high utilisation rates. It claims the fast setup, low maintenance, strong residual values and appeal across multiple customer segments make K cranes an attractive investment for equipment fleets. The applications Liebherr cites
its self-erectors as being well- suited to in North America include mid-rise commercial developments and infrastructure projects, single- family construction, and mid- to high-rise residential. And it’s this suitability for all
types of residential construction that is key, as residential construction is on the rise.
RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION According to data from global business information provider GlobalData (parent company of Cranes Today’s publisher BTMI) global residential construction is entering a period of steady but uneven growth with output between 2026 and 2029 forecast to rise across most regions. North America, in particular, is
the strongest driver of residential output in the western hemisphere, with the United States accounting for the second largest share of value worldwide.
Although underlying demand is healthy policy volatility under the Trump administration is reshaping cost structures and financing conditions, the report finds. Targeted federal grants and
affordable housing mandates offer support, yet tariffs on steel and aluminium elevate input costs, and compliance with new energy- efficiency standards raises upfront development hurdles. Even with these headwinds, though, North America’s scale ensures it remains a steady region for residential investments. The South Korean market,
too, has a residential construction outlook that the GlobalData report identifies as providing stable, high- value opportunities underpinned by advanced construction technology

and urban renewal programmes - perfect for Spierings. A fly-in-the-ointment could be that the country faces demographic challenges from aging and declining populations, which limit long-term growth. The suitability of Spierings’ cranes for a range of work, however, negates this long-term, low-level risk. Ultimately the scale of
opportunity embedded in global housing demand, underpinned by rising global populations, plus active government urban renewal projects, means the growth of residential construction will continue to fuel an expanding self/ fast-erector market. And while the rise of residential is attracting manufacturer investment, crane users benefit from increased access to advantages of this cranes type. A win/win in an otherwise uncertain world.

SARENS EXPANDS ITS FLEET OF SPIERINGS ELIFT CRANES
Crane rental, heavy lifting, and engineered transport specialist Sarens has ordered two additional Spierings eLift mobile tower cranes, expanding its eLift fl eet to ten units. The order includes a Spierings SK1265-AT5 eLift and a SK1265-AT6 eLift. This investment supports Sarens’ sustainability
strategy, aimed at structurally reducing CO2 emissions
without compromising operational performance. Sarens has been operating electric Spierings eLift cranes for nearly fi ve years, achieving up to 92% fuel reduction compared to conventional mobile tower cranes. Spierings says this not only reduces environmental impact but also delivers signifi cant cost savings, especially given current fuel prices.
