Lake Vyrnwy might be a manmade reservoir– having been built by the Liverpool Corporation Waterworks in the 1880s – but that doesn’t detract from its magnetism as a nature attraction. Today the Lake Vyrnwy Nature Reserve and Estate is popular with hikers and cyclists, as well as bird watchers.
It is part managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and is home to an estimated 250 species. It is also classed as a Special Area of Conservation, and a holiday home in this area puts you on the south eastern edge of Snowdonia, while still within convenient reach of towns such as Oswestry and Welshpool.
Further north, Bala - which means ‘the outfl ow of a lake’ in Welsh - is a town which is within the boundaries of the Snowdonia National Park.
This attractive, Welsh speaking market town off ers you a haven for relaxation and roaming Snowdonia, and it also attracts those interested in adventure sports, being home to Afon Tryweryn, a globally recognised hotspot for white water kayaking.
Just over the English border in Shropshire lies Oswestry, a quaint market town with the convenience of ample food stores. But while this market town provides the pick of modern conveniences - including weekly outdoor and indoor markets - it also has a rich history to discover, including a 3,000-year old Iron Age fort.
Betws Y Coed is a pretty little village in the Conwy Valley. A holiday home in this area puts you within the boundaries of the Snowdonia National Park, and only a short drive from seaside spots on the northern Welsh coast such as Rhyl and Colwyn Bay.
